Selling vs Improving Product (initial phase)

Hello IHers,

I'd appreciate advice from someone more experienced in this field.

Long-story short:

  • I started my SaaS app 1.5 months ago
  • I built the landing page first (early access sign-ups), started posting on social media (educational stuff in my niche), and got a good portion of sign-ups
  • I released my app almost 1 week ago and got 2 paid subscribers. Now, I have a decent flow of new users signing up.

I'm thinking about organizing my time regarding this project so I'd like to consult with someone more experienced in time management.

The question is:
What portion of your time do you spend on selling the product vs improving your product in this initial phase?

Do you spend 80% on selling and 20% on improving? Or is it 50% - 50%

What's the ratio that helped you move the needle?

There are a lot of opportunities in both sales and product improvement. So trying to prioritize (if it's needed).

Thank you in advance,

    Hey Teodor,

So, I've been creating and marketing products since the early 2000s.

First products I created were industry conferences and over the years I've helped businesses of all shapes and sizes market and sell their stuff (from the likes of Google, Microsoft, SAP to small service companies and SaaS startups).

I say this to everyone but it's even more important for solopreneurs - 90% of your time should be spent selling and marketing.

It really is the key to success.

You don't need a really great product - with the right marketing strategy you can actually build a very successful business and have very happy customers with a subpar product (HubSpot being a very good example for the first few years of its growth - I talk about the strategy that HubSpot used on my website - www.thebluntmethod.com)

Long story short - ruthlessly prioritize marketing and selling.

    Good luck

    Chris
