Hi everyone,
I'm developing a local services marketplace using Sharetribe, and the biggest hurdle is not even the tech, but the business side of things. I would love to get some help on the business model.
There are a couple of different models for service marketplaces:
Fiver/Upwork: The client posts a project and professionals bid on them. Once client accepts a proposal, transaction occurs and the platform gets a %.
Thumbtack: The client posts a project for free and professionals pay to bid. Once client chooses one, the transaction occurs off-platform.
The way I see none of them are really valuable for local service providers specifically. Say, a solo plumber, not a plumbing company. Here's why:
Local service providers, such as plumbers, are not really tech-savvy people, and will not be online applying for plumbing jobs, even if the bidding is for free. These suppliers usually only have internet access on mobile devices (based on my previous research).
The idea of having to pay to bid for a job that you don't even know you'll get seems outrageous to most of these professionals. It's basically the problem faced on the above model but with a boost of having to pay for the bidding. This works well with different kinds of service providers, such as marketers, developers, etc.
The way I'd like to do it is more similar to what TaskRabbit does.
The only problem I've been having with the model above is that most of these jobs are not as simple as "how much per hour". Some of them need budgeting, which means they need to know more about the project before specifying the price, and even if a job is applicable to the "price per hour" situation, I can't figure out how to get the client to insert the correct amount of hours before getting charged since we will have different categories, thus changing the usual amount of hours per service.
One possible solution would be to allow users (professionals and clients) to communicate prior and agree on a specific number of hours before paying, but that would also bring lots of platform leakage (people going around the platform).
Anyone would have ideas? I'd love to get some input.
Sorry for the long message, but not all problems can be explained in 200 characters or less.
Thanks!

I love the idea of finding local professionals for any product/service I want .
2.There will always be tasks/projects/services which cant be explicitly prescoped & priced. For those, the professionals can develop a requirement capturing form followed by 15 min video conference booking to understand customer req and then offer solution. With experience more projects can be prepackaged and moved to prepriced model.
Cant find community part well developed on sharetribe. I was expecting discussions section with Q&A on different topics in a niche .
Client should be able to book & execute paid video consulting sessions thru the platform.
Hi, @jupiter72. Thanks for such a thorough answer, mate.
The hurdle is exactly that one: how to package certain services, specially within the constrains of the platform. We need to do this in a no-code manner. Opening the communication once you buy a service will be done, but the “how to buy” problem needs solution. Meaning, I know how much that professional charges per hour, but how am I, the client, supposed to know how many hours will be required upfront, before buying?
Yeah I also love the idea of sort of creating an algorithm for every service category. For instance: for cleaning, we know that the basic amount of hours is X, but that we need to add 1 more hour on every bedroom on the house. Knowing that, I could ask how many bedrooms are there in the house and the price will be changed accordingly. I’m now sure it will possible to do that in Sharetribe, at least at first, and also how to go about doing that to other services. You’re saying that I should set a prescoped price for the initial 15 call between professional and client? My fear is that if there is no transaction upfront there will be platform leakage once they talk to each other.
Completely agree. Sharetribe’s forum is not well developed, and it should be better as they have 1000+ clients. Couldn’t find lots of people talking about it here on IH either, unfortunately.
This is definitely one of the things that we’d like to offer, but that will require some coding and customization, plus we would have to sign up for Sharetribe Flex, which is way more expensive and not viable at first. But this is in the roadmap.
Thanks a lot!
I totally see your point. I reckon these jobs will surely need some sort of open discussion between client and profession, and that is why we won't start there. We will start addressing home services and then grow our pool of categories from there. Thanks for the help!
