Setting Yourself Constrained Challenges

Inspired by @diannamallen's Tweet.

Setting yourself a challenge could apply to anyone, but maybe it could be a great idea for those new to indie hacking who feel stuck and unsure of what to focus on.

Setting yourself time and money constraints can help you:

  • focus in on figuring out how to quickly launch something of value
  • not get so deeply attached to the idea if it doesn't work out
  • practically understand the steps that are needed to make a product sell (profitably)
  • get a clearer picture of how people are creating new things today. Tools, methods and ideas can change quickly.

This can apply to bigger indie products too - the rush and excitement of indie hacking can wear off as growing a business gets more serious, keeping the ability to keep on experimenting (not necessarily on new products), can really help keep motivation up for the founders and maybe team members too.

Of course challenges like this have been popular over the years, launching a product every month or week, until burnout or success is achieved. Personally I like the idea of single idea without the additional pressure of making things a success.

Love this idea. It would be interesting to track the progress of something like this on MakerLog.
