Shall we see offline conferences/meetups formats happening virtually in near future?

Most of time it is hard to understand the quantifiable ROI of these gatherings, but they keep happening and growing.
What is the value for attendees that despite the huge investment of time and money, people do attend these in person conferences/meetups(here I am referring to events focused on knowledge and networking ) frequently despite so many online communities and ways to connect?
