I think it'd be nice if we all shared our social media pages so we can follow one another on our indie hacking journeys.

I currently have a side business in the works (order.ly) and maker community (justshipped) that we are trying to gain some traction on

I'm excited to see what everyone's feed looks like

    You can find me at:

    https://pleroma.cloud/tallship

Links to my other social media platforms are listed there, and for my .plan you can always finger [email protected]

I don't pay much particular attention to the oppressive corporate silos of cacophany that are full of hate and censorship like Twatter, InstaSPAM, or Faceplant, so people giving out those creds is basically a useless link for me. As an advocate of privacy and FOSS I find those places almost completely useless and fail to see why anyone would use them for their professional presence when there's so much more that is actually relevant and of distinguished significance in the open source community.

I do understand that there are a lot of devs in the Microsoft world so maybe those monolithic silos are appropriate for the folks working professionally on that side of the equation, but I don't really cross paths with those professonals much anymore, with my companies earning most of their revenue from the eradication of those technologies in the enterprise, and the deployment of FOSS - both on premise and hosted in my own data center facilities in the cloud.

    1. 2

Can you elaborate on how your companies make money by deploying FOSS, when it is free and open for everyone to use?

I'm just curious to know the model of this business and how it is sustainable in the long run.

      1. 2

Actually, it's selling software that is the non-sustainable model.

We charge labor for installation, updates, and security patches for all on premise and managed hosting. We also offer enterprises a myriad of unmanaged SaaS, IaaS, and PaaS hosted services at our data center facilities in Los Angeles and Helsinki.

The MRC model works well for us, provides a quantifiable income upon which we can reliably establish a budget while additional customers and subscriptions increases our bottom line.

If all you do is sell someone else's (or your own) software, you need to find new customers each month. If your focus is break/fix service you can't project reliably for your quarterly budget either.

We also require that all of our customers contribute annually (whatever they feel is fair) to the developers of any FOSS we install for them on premise, or in the cloud with our fully managed services. This helps to ensure the continued development of the products they use.

For example, most customers pay a sizable contribution to the Mautic developers, much much more than enough to buy them coffee, and are happy to do so. Compare that free software to Hubspot at about $5K/mo. Plus... They retain ownership of all of their data lolz.

Consider what little, if anything, you can mark up something like Windows for, or Office 365. We make much more money deploying LibreOffice and Thunderbird on the desktop than we ever would with Microsoft products and our customers save hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.

It's a win win anyway you look at it
        🤘🙂🤘

We also contribute toward all of the software projects that we offer hosted SaaS solutions for. For self-managed IaaS the customer is free to install and run whatever they want, and they are responsible for any licensing related matters for any proprietary software, while they merely pay us for monthly, quarterly, or annual hosting fees.

For closed source, proprietary software, it's almost always only self-managed hosting on the virtual machinery chosen by the customer.

        Does that help?

        1. 2

Thanks for the explanation. It helps for sure!

This is a point of view which I have neither considered nor exposed to, before. Will keep exploring the options over time.

Doesn't really seem useful but it sure sounds like fun!

      1. 1

thanks :) yes it's more like fun! but my idea is that it could be a nice traffic acquisition channel as long as it keep growing in visits :)

        1. 1

Yes, very interesting! Branding looks good too. Might get more interest if site linked out for whoever owned the homepage. But maybe there are risks involved with that?

          1. 2

yes it links out but the current owner did not provide any url 😞I hope that soon someone will beat him so that all of you can see a more complete product :)

    2. 1

Very cool, I've given you a follow. How many actual payments have you gotten through isricher?

      1. 1

Thanks man! right now 12 users paid! ( 12 more of what i was excepting !) now i'm trying to get some traction and more traffic on it. In future i will add a leaderboard !

My blog and personal infos can be found on https://schakko.de. I am covering a lot of topics: somewhere between management, CI/CD, Java/PHP and networking issues.

Currently I am working on ninkik, a platform to easier publish software products on marketplaces like Gumroad.

My latest side project is database-modelling.com, a newsletter course to get better in database/ER modelling. It's primarily focused on trainees and students. I've started it because schools and study courses for database modelling are lacking pratical exercises which deal with topics like modelling social networks, history tables and deriving a database schema from a screenshot.
