Shipped $15k in July from my Garage (10+ ROAS)

This last month has been a LOT of work, but results like these are so f*cking exciting

This is a business model that I've been testing now for about a year, similar to Stitch Fix, but a more niche jewelry product, that I had built a seven figure brand around in the past, that later failed, and put me through a really rough period...

Buuut I'm finally starting to feel validated from this new model, that should CRUSH 6 figures monthly in a few months time after seeing the 10X+ ROAS

First, to explain the biz model:

Essentially I am running a front end Typeform quiz that's very casual(which I may or may not have thrown together while quite intoxicated) for a box with a free product to keep + 5 custom "stylist" picks to try at home for a charge of $13 upfront, that is then credited towards the other picks in the box. A prepaid return shipping label is included with each order. Customers are put into SMS and Email automation sequences that send a follow up Typeform(The Return Quiz).

Shipping I handled myself with the help of some friends paid in beer.

The results have been jawdropping, and I have just not been able to scale it fast enough yet bootstrapping it and running it entirely on my own, with one virtual assistant.

It has been a ton of work for me, but the most exciting thing is that it’s scalable, with crazy ROI, just need to get the tech stack in place and the process hammered out.

Now some of the numbers:

Total Adspend of: $1415.79
Conversions: 421
Quiz Submissions(Email + Phone + Bday + Sizing info): 7,298
Frontend Initial Charge Revenue: ~$5701
Backend Revenue from Quiz: ~$9,594
Renewals: 101

As a marketing nut like myself those numbers are insane, the total ROAS came out to 10.8!!

Additionally, around ~30% of customers opted in to continue their membership, so this should be good for $2000-5000 MRR depending on AOV for month 2.

Focuses for this next month for me include building and shipping the second month for recurring customers, as well as running another ad batch this time aiming for around 1,000 orders before turning off ads.

Just wanted to share with the community here, ya’ll have been incredibly helpful in building with No Code solutions as a solo bootstrapper!

MadBrad, wow that is quite an accomplishment. You literally put this together with TypeForm quizes? Hahaha that is incredible. Where do you advertise? Those ad prices seem really solid!

It seems like you've got a real hit here man, keep nurturing this thing. If you need any help on the tech stack let me know!

Yeah, Typeform has been an incredible incentive to get insanely low cost opt ins at the front end of the funnel. Then running SMS + Email abandon sequences has performed great. I think part of the reason it performs so well is users are invest, it is geared more like an application/quiz than an actual sales page.

This is advertising on Snapchat as well as Instagram. Both story ad format. Instagram ad is a 3 post video carousel, and snapchat is a single video story ad with an animated Swipe up call to action.

Thank you Fitz! May reach out to you with tech concerns, as that's honestly the biggest thing holding it back.

Wow I never thought about that, it totally makes sense that a quiz would take off the "salesy" element and make it all about the experience. And Snapchat and IG are def great platforms for targeting people interested in jewelry. Very impressed!

Yes I would be glad to help with any tech questions and guidance. I've built many software platforms in my 15+ year career as a professional software designer and developer. My email is fitimb@gmail.com. Good luck!

        Best,
        Fitz

That's really awesome! Have you done anything with box sizing or weight to try to optimize shipping costs? Everytime I ship something, the prices can be shock, I can't imagine paying for the shipping both ways.

With USPS First Class, in my use case, box size isn’t super relevant as we’re using the lowest rate with tracking usually (under .5lb), so shipping comes out to $3.20-$3.80 at current rates, paid twice. I have been voiding the unused return labels and receiving refunds for them, so effectively the only ones I’m paying for are the ones being

Some of the shipping costs will be passed on to the customers, but the return shipping labels definitely adds a big expense, but it also eliminates a huge amount of chargeback fraud and dissatisfied customers, as they literally just have to slap on the label and send it back if they aren’t happy

Oh yeah, customers love having the return label ready to go, that eliminates a big potential objection right away. Thanks for the reply!

Of course! I was away on a trip so I missed this post.

Who knows how this will continue to work with the political games being played with the USPS right now... Hoping the best for the USPS

@MadBrad - Nice work & congrats! That's super-fast grow, which is pretty rare.

Kinda jealous (in a good way), because my main projects have grown slowly. But, your initial success is inspiring.

I'm based in Los Angeles as well. Live on the West Side, and have an eCom shop (2.6k square feet) just south east of DTLA.

If you ever wanna connect, drop me a line at oh.iam.mike@gmail.com.

Plus, if you find a time where you need to get out of your garage, and want a place to hang with a Product guy and do some shipping, hit me up.

I'm getting ready to wind down one of my eCom initiatives and will likely sell another smaller side hustle in early 2021, so I can focus on other stuff. So, I'll have some extra room in our shop :)

Thanks for the feedback Mike! I’d love to come check out your shop and see what you guys are up to, the prospect is exciting to me. With my previous biz we had a small office/fulfillment center <500sqft. Space out here is really expensive and it’s hard to justify signing a lease until things are really rolling.

Shooting you an email later in the day or tomorrow!

Ask any questions feel free! I however do not want to give out the name of the brand yet, until it's all polished and fully open, and these test runs are over!
