Seven weeks in. 60 installs. £0 revenue. But today something fundamental changed.
V1.0.2 just went live on the Chrome Store. Here's what shipped. Daily query limit of 25 for free users with a usage counter shown subtly in the UI that turns amber when running low. Key Points moved to the free tier with a 5 per day cap. Friendly restricted page message instead of silent failure. First time onboarding screen for new users. Improved sign in copy.
Why this matters. Before today there was literally no reason to create an account or pay. OpenAI and Claude were completely free with no caps. Someone could install it and use it forever without ever seeing an upgrade prompt.
That's fixed now.
The query limit is the conversion trigger. Someone installs, uses it daily, hits 25 queries, sees "upgrade to keep going without limits" for the first time. That's the moment the product can actually make money.
First paying user target is end of April. The mechanism now exists for the first time. Let's see if it works.
Happy to hear from anyone who's solved the free to paid conversion problem for Chrome extensions specifically. What worked for you?
