Should Black Friday discount be recurring or one-time?

Hey everyone!

I'm currently working on implementing the discount logic for Sizzy and I have a dilemma. Sizzy is subscription-based so I have the choice to make the discount one-time or recurring.

For my last Halloween sale I offered 20% lifetime discounts but I have a feeling that lifetime discounts might not be fair towards existing customers (especially the ones who signed up recently).

I know it's kind of stupid to give a lifetime discount for Halloween, and not for Black Friday, so I'm really interested about your opinion on this topic.

Also, if the user upgrades their plan, should the discount be removed?

How are you giving out these discounts for your SaaS products? Maybe I'm overthinking this?

Thanks!

I'm going to have a Black Friday discount for https://www.regirank.com and also https://savedreplies.io and they're both going to be recurring, now let me tell you why.

First, when I see a discount only for the first month I close the page pretty fast, I mean it's only for a month, so there is no fear of missing out, it not such a good deal anyway, so I wait and see if I really need this tool.

    Another thing to consider:
Your churn rate will be smaller if you offer a recurring discount.
Let me explain why, in the past I got some deals, maybe on Black Friday or something else, most of the times I didn't even use these things to their full potential, but I was keeping them, because maybe one day I will use them, and when I need them I don't want to pay the full price.
Or if I start using something for a few months, then I don't need it anymore, I still keep it for a few months at least, thinking that I may need it in the future.

Now when it comes to not being fair towards existing customers, you may be right, if it's possible you could try to offer fewer features to the ones that get the discount.
Or another thing, to increase the LTV of your customers, you could try to do a yearly plan with a discount, this way, even the people that are paying monthly will get the benefits if they get an yearly plan.

That’s a tough one. As a customer, when I’d see an offer like this, I’d probably be wondering if I could get that too. But then again, most of your customers probably aren’t actively looking for discounts for a service they already use.

I’d say be ready to apply that discount to an existing account if someone reaches out.

Alternatively, you could offer (a bigger?) discount for the first year. That seems like a pretty good value but you’re not giving select customers a permanent advantage based on when they signed up.

Or maybe give customers other means of gaining the same discount. Like writing a review or referring someone. That makes it seem less arbitrary.

Only note I have, is: Make it easy for people to want to give you money.

Replied to your tweet, but posting here for posterity.

Recurring, sucks for existing users that they don't get the discount, but the idea of these discounts aren't to give your product away for cheaper, but to get those customers who just may think the price was a bit too high and this discount will get them in.

If they feel they got cheated, then they never seen Sizzy as worth the price and they'll never be satisfied with the value it brings.

I do first month only, and have seen this pattern done by other large SaaS like grammarly.
