Should I be giving away my product for free?

Hi everyone!

Justin here, nice to meet you!

I've been working on https://crowdparty.app/ for the past 8 months. We've launched several times over the past 8 months but our official launch date was Oct. 22, 2020. I say this because that's when we launched with Pricing Tiers and launched to our prospective channels, namely, LinkedIn and Facebook.

Just a couple of stats:

  • MRR: $177
  • 128 registered users
  • Average active users / day: 98

Key facts about the website:

  • Free by default (Our Free tier would give access to host games up to 15 Rounds and up to 10 people)
  • Sign-up is optional (only when you want to create Custom games and have them saved on your account)
  • Offering 3-months free to early adopter organizations

Right now, I seem to be struggling with growth. One thing is for sure: I don't have enough expertise penetrating big orgs and I think that's been a critical bottleneck.

So what I've been doing so far has been giving 3-months no-questions-asked licenses to organizations for the sake of Brand Recognition.

I know the product has somewhat of a network effect:

  • Employees host games for other companies
    • other companies recognize the experience and thus the product
  • Employees host games for employees
    • other employees recognize the experience and thus the product

I guess, overall, at this point, I'm just a little desperate for growth, hence why I'm offering it for free. I know that there have been several guides saying that this is probably a sign for lack of a Product Market Fit, but it's been such a passion project and I honestly think we've built something great, and maybe it's just a matter of discovery.

Would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks for taking the time to hear me out! 😊

Cool product! Have you tried Google search ads? I'm seeing decent monthly search volume for "Zoom games" at a reasonable cost per click, you could also target "meet games", "hangout games" etc. And if you see success you could look at creating SEO content.

Hey Francis, I've definitely been testing out ads. They've been working pretty well! I definitely think I do need to focus on SEO content.

      Thanks, Francis!

Really tricky one. My gut instinct is that offering it free is not solving the main problem, which is understanding whether you've built something that's valuable enough for people to pay for it. I think you should see the free plan as marketing, and assess its success not in terms of how many users it gets you, but how many paying users it gets you. I guess you've probably had all these thoughts - I'm just a vote for the 'na, I think you need paying users' side.

Hey Louis, that's a good thought. I could see that as being a very important metric: conversions after offering a free trial plan. Looks like it's something I'll need to experiment with.

      Thanks!
