Should I become a workaholic when building a start-up?🧟‍♀️

Hello Indie Hackers! 🧞‍♂️

When it comes to a start-up, probably you begin to think:
"Hmm, how much time it will take me to run the project to make it successful? "

Well, no one knows, me either but ! And there is this huuuge BUT!
People say that you should focus on one thing, because when you are "multitasking" nothing gonna be made as it should be done! Some of you reading would say "no, thats not true". And maybe you are already on the way to exit from this article but wait a second....

What if you set yourself time limits? When you put yourself under pressure that you need to finish something in one hour you know you need to hurry up. No more Facebook, Indie Hackers etc. just you and your work. Lovely huh? 💁‍♀️

At the end of the day you will figure out that you have made more things and faster than usually! Satisfaction? You will go to your bed with a clean head and being more proud of yourself. Trust me.

Put yourself into YOUR project!👌
Give as much time as you can. Not everyone can afford to work only on one project. Sometimes you mix it with you everyday life. But remember - dream hard, work harder.

What is your way of thinking? Maybe you think that we should not overwhelm ourselves with too much work? Or you are having some tips for workaholics? We will be more than happy to read them!

Ps. Thank you so much for reading this article! Here is a small gift for you!

absolutely not. i believe your best work, on the whole, comes from a well-rested and cared-for mind, body, and spirit.

i say “on the whole” because it’s not possible to avoid difficult times (or even a pandemic!) so you’ll find yourself in periods where the business simply needs more of your time.

    just don’t make it permanent.

i set a cultural goal of 40-hours per week for my venture backed startup and i share some more thoughts on our handbook on github.

there’s no way that this happens perfectly each week and i’m not counting as that’s not the point. but, it puts a bug in everyone’s ear that this is what we’re aiming for, even if we aren’t perfect always in our execution,

That's right! When building a startup never forget about "yourself" 🧖‍♂️
      Thank you! 😋

If there's $$$ on the line then sure, work away. But I just had my first kid this year and its made me hyper aware of were my time is spent. Its almost like I was living in a fog before this. Working but not always on the right things.

Be conscious of your time. More time sitting down and working does not mean you're productive.

Agree! Thank you @maxdobeck for your advices!
      By the way congratulations 🥳

    Hi Karolina!

Sometimes I get caught up thinking its simply about the number of hours that I dedicate to my project while in reality its more about the number of ~meaningful~ hours I dedicate. I find that if I'm always head down, I miss the thoughtful moments that lead to more efficient work and better work/product outcomes. Take some time, rest, think about how you can do 2x, 4x, 10x work so you don't have to be a workaholic.

Taking that approach will help you find balance and more often than not keep your product on the right path!

Of course only my opinion... I'll be following your progress! Keep us updated with what works and what doesn't!

In short: no. Startups are a marathon, not a sprint.

The burnout is all to real and you risk going from loving to hating your project if you do this.

Set clear barriers between where work life begins and ends. I try to never work on weekends - I dedicate that time to my family and to myself - to do something other than just thinking and worrying about my startup.

I then start on Monday re-energized and eager to work. Stepping away also helps my brain to work on some ideas or problems "in the background" and I can come up with creative solutions that I never would if I just work 24/7.

So set your limit and stick to it. Working 100 hours/week of which 40 hrs you're a tired mess won't help your product.

Startups are a marathon, not a sprint. 🙌
      Thank you @ValCanBuild ! 🤗

work too much doesn't lead to success, but burn out. the trick here is working the right process. you want to be on the right path, which means u need to understand the process.

A lot of entrepreneurs didn't understand this, they hit a lot of preventable mistakes. Which is really sad. (been there done that a hundred times)

Understand the process is the key. what are you specificly building right now?

Hello @kanglelin, appreciate your comment! I see that a lot of people agree to have healthy working routine! I am so happy of that! 😍

Our project is connected with real estates, however we are not another real estate company. We have created a tool for those searching an apartment, it's a browse extension where with one click you can lists apartments from different websites. Automatically you can save the price and the address of the property, also the contact number to the agent/landlord. We are in progress to build new futures.
Feel welcome to check our website! We would appreciate your feedback and testing the tool! 🤠

However, it's always a struggle with yourself. Because the founder always have problem stop working. Like me right now. i cant stop hahah. Its sunday.

I like the idea. The site looks neat. U ever thought about building up a community around ur product? I think there are always demand in that in real estate related stuff.

I live in SF so i know the pain. lol

        1. 1

I am trying to build a community on social media like facebook groups, we also have our FB page but honestly its very difficult! We are currently focusing on mostly building community and it takes sooooo much time! Maybe you have some advices?🤗

          1. 1

Glad I can help out here. Community building is very fun to me.
I wrote couple blogs about it. the one that kinda introduces the main parts of community building is this one, its very good. https://kanglelin.com/build-your-vibrant-community-in-5-mins-reading/

I am also offering a community-building basic course. I don't know if it's gonna be full soon. But I recommend you to check it out.
            https://kanglelin.com/pubbbuilderproject/

But in general, I would recommend you to understand the process of community building. especially around the problem space and customer discovery. Find the right problem to solve is everything, even comes to community building. They are the backbone of ur community.

Lmk if there's anything I can help!

      1. 1

        totally back at ya hahha

        1. 1

          Real has recognized real. :)

          Have a great one!

          1. 1

you are real good at words hahah, are u working on any project lately?

  6. 2

Probably. The idea doesn't matter, execution does. Your ability to quickly try things and execute is going to be one of the central factors as to whether you succeed. Also if you get traction you will get competitors, and you will need to do a superior job to them.

    1. 1

What you think about doing this superior job with setting a time limit?
But I totally agree that you have to try things as fast as possible to understand quickly if they are working. 😊 Thanks @PayOffWizard 😋

“there are 24 hours in a day, 8 for sleep, 8 for day-job, 1 for rest, 7 for hustle”
That's is pretty much my routine nowadays. But until targetaudience.app is gonna bring in some money I'm not gonna quit my job.

But I love it so much that I don't consider myself a workaholic right now. As a matter of fact, I thought I could never work 60-80 hours in a week in my life but now I found what I love, I really don't mind. And quarantine helps a bit as well probably.

      1. 4

Find something you love and you will never have to be "working". 🤩
I am very happy for you! Keep pushing and pushing and once again pushing!!!!! Good luck @MrAtiebatie !👏

Thank you @RyanLC for sharing! I like your way of thinking - “there are 24 hours in a day, 8 for sleep, 8 for day-job, 1 for rest, 7 for hustle”. But as you said that workaholism is not the only way to succeed! 🤩 Its very difficult to understand that sometimes... 🤔
