Should I Build This?

I want to build a journaling app that functions as a place to store and tag all of your personal media.

I want to build this to scratch my own itch. I'm an artist, songwriter, and lifelong journal-er.

As such, I have a metric heck-ton of digital notes, images, videos, audio files... and they are scattered across a handful of platforms.

I use Apple Notes, Apple Photos, Google Drive, Notion, my own personal Slack, and Dropbox to keep track of notes and media files.

I'm consistently amazed when I look at/listen to/watch old notes, journal entries, voice memos, images, and videos.

I often find that an idea that I had yesterday is actually something I've been thinking about for years.

Features

1. "This Time Last Year" Feature

For the purposes of this type of reflection, this app would have a calendar/date feature, so for every day it would show you what notes, photos, voice memos etc exist from that day in previous years.

  1. "Playlist" Feature

There would also be a "playlist" feature, in which you'd be able to create a playlist of audio files, video files, and text files. The text files would be read out loud by text-to-speech.

One big use case for me is being able to listen to the many versions of my acoustic song demos, and to have them all in one place. It would be helpful to make a playlist of all my demos, and then consistently wittle them down into an album.

I can't currently do this on any web-first platform.

3. Tagging and search

Another small piece of the origin story for this project was that, when I was working on putting a small documentary about my dad's side of the family, there was no quick and robust way to track, tag, and search all of the media assets in the project.

Adobe Premiere does an ok job of it, but serves only the single purpose of creating videos.

Summary

To summarize, this journaling app would be for reflection, context, idea generation, and otherwise "second braining", and piecing together the rough materials for new projects.

Please let me know what you think in the comments.

If you have any pointers on how you might build this, please share! I've tried glide.app but couldn't figure out the file storage aspect.

Thanks!

I would like an app that is an idea recorder. I am having ideas when I walk around and would like to take a picture, make notes, come up with (domain) names, look for trends. Bit different, but similar in some ways.

      Have you ever tried Evernote?

      1. 2

I found Evernote a bit clunky. What I'd specifically like to do, that I think is different, is create a journal app where you can create "playlists" of different media assets, and share them.

I want to be able to sequence my notes, voice memos, etc and hit play and play through them.

The second thing I'd really like to do, is to create a searchable index of all of the media assets.

Evernote may have had some of this functionality, but when I used it I felt there were just too many options, and not enough ways to curate, tag, or sort my notes. I haven't used it in a year or two though, so it may be really good now!

I still want to build my thing though haha

Yes, that's definitely similar and I like that idea a lot. If you'd ever like to chat or even sketch something out together in Figma, I'd be down!

Yes, let's have a chat. I had the urge this week and was looking for apps while waiting for the metro and found some articles about note-taking, but could be much more niche or elaborate. Let's plan something beginning of the New Year.

This is neat, a cataloguing and tagging system for web bookmarks. Looks like the link to the actual Glide app is down but I love the idea.
