Should I buy a backlink from a startup directory?

Back in the day when the web was wild, free and open, that's a long long time ago :) people would link to you free of charge, now everybody wants those darn dollar bills for a hyperlink.

I am in desperate need of some backlinks :)

Has any of you Indiehackers seen much success buying backlinks from startup directories or is a complete waste of money?
