Should I buy twitter followers?

Hello people, I am trying to build my community on twitter, my twitter account is fresh, I have 35 tweets and 55 followers, so I had that idea to try to buy followers, after a quick google search, I found that this method has some pros but and a lot of cons, I read somewhere this:

Anyone profiting off of deception and impersonation is breaking the law,” says the New York attorney general. A settlement has found that selling fake engagement on social media is illegal. Selling fake friends doesn't pay

Is that true? Is it illegal to do such a move?

I would love to know your thoughts!

I don’t know if it’s illegal, but don’t do it. It just won’t help in any kind of way.

Thanks, @rosiesherry for your input, the more I read I realize that is a very bad move.

At my product, www.ruttl.com, I am hustling and building my initial audience organically. I can relate to your situation @gexos and would love to pitch in my opinion on this.

Twitter followers is a vanity metric in the world of marketing. Sure, buying followers will make your account look better, but it couldn't be far from the reality that none of those followers will pay you for anything in the future.

You are better of tweeting 2-3 times a day for 2-3 months and generating organic 50-60 followers who would be your target audience.

Don't buy followers :) I might be biased, I work here.

I'd suggest thoroughly reading all Twitter rules, policies and ToS.

its perfectly legal. what do you hope to achieve by doing this?

I don't think it's illegal per se - though do note that this should not constitute legal advice.

It's just so easy to lookup twitter accounts and whether their following is genuine or not that I wouldn't bother.

Granted the algos detecting fake followers are not perfect but I'd stay clear as you want to establish a baseline trust with your followers - if they find out most of your engagement is fake then I don't think they'd stick around for long - and all it takes is a simple google search for twitter audit tools for the party to be over.

I second @nclsmrz recommendation - DIY and build those relationships

Something that might help you reach further audiences is buying retweets - is a frowned upon practice but many twitter pros I know swear by it. That way any followers you'd get would (almost) be "organic"

Fair point as it's not a daily practice - a few months back a number of big accounts I follow did a test on their followers and made the results public. This gave me the idea and I have done a couple of such twitter audits since then.

Gets blatantly obvious something is off if you have 10k+ followers and barely 1 like/retweet per 10 posts - that's when I'd check

    I've wondered about it too.

Not buying followers though but hiring a cheap agency specialized in acquiring followers where they interact with others with likes and maybe comments. This way you get followers that might engage with you.

But it's still a far cry compared to doing it yourself and building relationships. I recommend that above all else.

It would be pointless even if it was legal.

The point of a large following is to get genuine engagement and interest in your work. And, assuming you post valuable content, quality people follow you even if you have just a dozen followers, so social proof isn't required.

I think that if you are interested to promote your page than all the methods are good. I also have an Instagram page and a YouTube channel with hand-made toys that I would like to promote. So, I made inquiries on the internet about correct using of the advertising services in social networks and I found some offers to get cheap YouTube views https://popularitybazaar.com/facebook-photo-post-likes/ for your page for a very affordable price. Indeed, I would never get such popularity if I would ask hundreds of users in pm. More than that, after using this service, the number of new followers began to increase with every day.

No never buy followers, it just diminishes your brand. Also creates an illusion that you’re doing something then it turns into frustration that the bought followers don’t engage with your content.

Plus I don’t think it’s illegal. You know how many businesses buy fake followers 😹

What's the motivation behind buying followers? Do you want to appear more successful than you are? Maybe some people take notice of the number of followers an account has, but I never do. If you're serving me worthwhile and relevant content/entertainment, I'll follow you. I bet a bunch of other people will too.

I wouldn't recommend it. Similar to buying Facebook likes, the platform can recognise any inauthentic increases is account followers and even penalise the account.

I'd recommend re-allocating the money into profile followers ads.

The aim is to have the most engaged audience, not the biggest audience, so just keep consistently posting good content and it'll grow over time.

Not illegal, BUT don't do it as it's pointless!

I wrote a whole blog post on how to get Twitter followers organically if you're starting from scratch, and here's what you shouldn't do:

    1. Buy followers/verified accounts

Don't do it. It's a waste of time and money.

Your engagement rate will be near-zero, and it adds zero value. Totally pointless!

And depending on your niche, it will be obvious to many others that your followers (or verified status) are bought, and they'll avoid you like the plague, because nobody likes a deceptive person.

    2. Follow-for-follow

    Yes, we'll be following people.

But no, we'll not be following people in hopes of having them follow us back.

That worked in 2010 maybe; in 2020, people are way smarter.

Accounts that engage in this type of I-help-you-so-you-help-me "number games" have absolutely zero interest in what you have to say, let alone what you have to sell.

I've seen accounts with upwards 30,000 followers that don't get a single like/retweet on their tweets; it's just embarrassing and overall a bad look.

    3. Incentives

Okay, this one is controversial, but, if you're incentivizing people to follow you (i.e. via contests/giveaways), you're likely to find that your average following quality and engagement will go down.

(Exception: if you're just buying followers or running giveaways to provide a base number of followers for credibility and optics, that's fine I suppose, but it should be a one-off thing and definitely not your primary strategy.)

    🗝️ Key takeaway

Your follower count is not your audience, and your audience is not your follower count.

It's possible to have a big follower count and still no real audience.

And it's also possible to have a real audience with a low follower count.

It's not a great idea. Don't do it. There is no point having fake followers.

Follower count should not be the metric to focus on. Engagement with your posts should be! Focus on leveraging bigger accounts for now - some tips are here: https://twitter.com/JanelSGM/status/1299326094416531461?s=20

I doubt it's illegal. However, what do you expect from buying followers? That's the important question. Do you think that you buy future customers?
