Should I live stream myself coding my project

Hi Fellow Indiehackers,

I've seen a couple of people live stream themselves (not sure if they are from IH) developing their own projects and I've found I've picked up some useful tips and I've seen the developer pick up ideas from people watching their stream, and I am considering giving a try myself.

For those that don't know, I'm currently building a new crash monitoring service called Crash Catch based on ReactJS, PHP and C++ so this is what I would be streaming, primarily focusing on the ReactJS and PHP side, at least initially.

The reasons for wanting to give this a try, seemed like something fun to try and thought either myself might get some good advice either on the development side, or on the actual project side but viewers may also learn something new or get ideas as well for their own projects. Plus, I'm building this for fellow developers so if I can get some feedback as I code then that would be a huge bonus 😀

Plus hopefully I can build a bit of trust with people who then may be more likely to consider using my project whereas at the moment, I'm a bit of an unknown entity so can be hard to get any users.

I've never streamed before, so this may not be something I'd want to do for long, either because I'm just not comfortable streaming or viewers don't find it particularly useful or interesting, considering this as more of a trial run initially.

How I envisage this working is as follows:

  • The first stream would be a test run to prove that I am capable of streaming, both in terms of myself, and hardware/connectivity wise (I think the most likely weak point there is myself). This first stream would be a kind of AMA relating to myself, within reason of course, Boardies IT Solutions and Crash Catch, with maybe a run through of what I currently have with Crash Catch and how everything hangs together currently.
  • Each stream after the test stream, assuming I continue, would be primarily coding, working on a specific task within the project
  • At the moment I don't have any particular timescales of how long each stream will last or when I would stream, but I would expect at least initially it would be a couple of hours, most likely in the evening around 9.30pm UK time and weekends as I have to do this project around my full time job.

Is this something you'd be interested in watching? If so, is there anything in particular you'd want to see or any particular way of doing the stream you'd like?

If you've done this yourself, any advice on what to do and what steps I should take to get started would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

Commit to like 10 episodes and just do them. The benefits are getting to know a new area on the internet and a new skill. Story telling (mainly editing) was a major eyeopener for me. This skill will prove beneficial in startups too.

That's a good idea, thanks for the feedback

      I agree with @krister

It looks like this could be a brilliant way to build a following: https://www.twitch.tv/directory/game/Programming

That was the section I was planning on using on Twitch :)

Yes, go for it. It's brilliant and just the right time.

          I'm considering doing this myself.

          Happy to be a resource!

Cheers, I'll keep a look out for you as well. :)

try it. see how it feels. you might like it. you might hate it.

That's a great idea, and what a nice name for your product by the way (Crash Catch)!

Send a link when you go live - I'll be watching!

Just make sure you really mask out any secret keys or passwords when streaming. That could potentially be lethal later on, if you don't.

Glad you like the idea and the product name :). I'll def be posting a link when live but there is a sign up interest site at crashcatch.com. Admitidely its more of a placeholder site at the moment as it doesn't give much detail or screenshots until I'm a bit further along in the development.

I did consider secret keys and passwords etc, they're all in a config file so I just make sure I don't open that config file up on the stream, that could be bad :)

I agree with @krister. Just go and see :)
What solution will you use to live stream? YouTube?

    1. 1

Most likely Twitch, but I've seen there's a way of using something called Restreamer (not looked into it too much yet) so if I can use that I might see if I can stream to Twitch and YouTube concurrently.

Awesome. I believe Gary v was using that too. Wouldn't be surprised If he's backing it. It's solving a really annoying problem 👌

Just jump on a stream and see how it goes. If you enjoy it, then you'll continue. I imagine it would take a while to build up a following, but it might be useful to people to come chill and hang out and watch you work.

Cheers for the feedback. Yea I'm not expecting to get a following straight away, probably be a miracle if I just manage to get 5 viewers initially :)
