Hey everyone, I recently launched a chrome extension for developers that makes working with Tailwind CSS much more faster and convenient (https://supertweak.dev)
I am getting pretty good reviews from people who've used it, but till now there is only a single sale (around 654 visitors till now, according to my analytics).
It's currently priced at $30. I am wondering whether I should offer a free version to get early users and offer a paid upgrade. I am yet to launch on ProductHunt.
What should I do?
Update: Thanks for all the advice :) I added a free trial. Now available at https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/supertweak/ngpohagmellcpabooffmhlieiemlaibg
I think a 7-day trial is a great idea. Or a free version, with upgrade option.
You could also host a low-powered version for free on Github, open source, which could drive traffic.
I think $30 actually seems like a fair price. If my time is worth $100/hr, if this saves me 20 minutes it makes it worth it.
For the right developer, I think it could be about as helpful as Github Autopilot (correct me if I'm wrong) so the pricing seems decent.
Agree. It's a developer/B2B product so a free trial is a better strategy than freemium. Let users experience its full power for free (and make sure it does what they want/need/expect), then charge the full amount. With freemium you risk needlessly giving away 80% of core features away for free and monetising only users with niche/advanced needs.
How much to charge is a whole different conversation. The trick is finding a price that's proportional to the cost/value ratio of Tailwind (UI) and other SaaS tools. Good luck!
Good points. More inclined to releasing a trial version now. Thanks!
Thanks! That's what I think too.
Instead of a trial, I was thinking of limiting a few features and releasing in the chrome webstore. And add a few more features like a class autocomplete for the pro version.
The Chrome web store will not bring any traffic. Trust me, it is not a marketing strategy 😛 at least until you're ranked top 5 in a particular category.
I think Github would be a better traffic source. That's where developers spend time, not the Chrome Web Store.
haha yeah
Looks pretty polished, congrats! As a developer though (which I believe is your main target audience), I can't really justify paying for this as this information is available in the dev tools already. A free version with limited features might help. Maybe while using it, I come to find out that it's actually simple to use your extension than making changes via the dev tools.
If you are using Tailwind, devtools is not as useful since only the styles required for the classnames in your code is included in the page.
Thanks for the suggestion, I might release a free version.
In the first month, we should start free. After one month analyze the Customer behavior.
Definitely, you can come up with a free version that has some limited features. The feature differences between both versions will be making calls for the sale.
I'm more inclined to a free trial now
We have launched the product on ProductHunt(https://www.producthunt.com/posts/audaos), in this stage, the free version will get more sights and upvotes.
My product named @AudaOS, is for marketing, teacher, consults, etc.
I want to offer free version for 1 year because I need to fix and develop more valuable
features to open the market.
In my eyes, growth is soooooo significant for startups, hhhhh~
Launching that in a free version would be much better for many of those who wouldn't be able to afford that. Also, once after seeing the audience's response, you can jump on to the subscription as per the demand.
Thanks for your suggestion.
Just me speaking personally -- the cost is negligible, but I'm still not going to buy the product unless I feel the value.
Right now (from looking at landing page), it seems like a possibly-nice-to-have and something that might be useful, but I'm still unclear how this will save me time / fit into my workflow / is this something I'd actually use [eg. I don't have a burning irritation w/ Tailwinds as is].
I'd do everything possible to get people using it -- and then dig a little more to figure out a value prop that resonates more strongly.
That's a great feedback man. I get you. It's a nice tool to have, but not a necessity.
What do you think about marketing this to non-technical folk ? So that they can try out changes without needing to rely on developers for everything?
Rather than a one-time payment, have you considered a subscription? People get regular value from your tool, it's only fair that they pay regularly.
That said, people are trained to use extensions for free, so it's hard to sell them.
I'd vote for a free trial rather than freemium. Freemium is great when it helps to achieve virality, e.g. watermarking.
Subscription is more of a hard sell for extensions I think. Free trial sounds good.
Hey @althaffe I'd first suggest you use an exit-intent popup tool on your website to find what's the reason people are bouncing off the website. Is it because the price is high or there's some other reason? I did the same for www.glyphleads.com & found that my coverage of skill categories was the reason for people dropping off the website & not because they didn't like the offering!
Or you can even offer your tool for free for 2 weeks & see if there's any spike in sign-ups, thereafter it will be easy for you to navigate further.
All the best!
That's solid advice Swapnil. I am not yet completely sure whether price is the only reason for low conversion.
I would personally use product led growth in this case. Users should have an option to try the product before having to pay for it.
Regarding monetization I think you can test one of the two ways. One is a freemium model where certain features are free forever with optional premium features are available for a one off cost.
The second option is a free trial and users would need to pay for continued use after trial ends. One thing I would suggest if you want to go this route, maybe test out "Pay what you want" pricing structure instead of a fixed price. This way you will be getting real world insights how much users actually want to pay for this solution.
Based on my own thoughts, since this product is for developers I would be inclined to use the freemium model and test it out first.
Hope this helps.
Thanks for your suggestion :) I think I might go with a free trial for now.
Never offer a free version of your product. It would devalue the whole product and your hard work. You can have a 7 or 14-day free trial for people to test it out, and if it solves their pain point, they will pay for it.
You should provide good support for only paid customers, it would also optimize your time and value of support.
That's a good point man. Now I'm more inclined to providing a free trial instead of a free version.
Awesome, happy to help
Hey Muhammad, I agree with the other comments - I think it's best to create a free trial. But the spin I would recommend is to create a feature limitation that pushes your user to need to purchase.
The purpose of the free trial would be to give a glimpse of what is possible and how much easier developers can have it, but by upgrading, they can unlock an entire plethora of value/time efficiency
You can easily push free trial users to become paying users by setting up a "feature limitation" and "ascension" email flow
Feature limitation emails - triggered when the user maxes out on a free feature and will push them to upgrade to reap the full benefits
Ascension emails - helps the user get the most out of the free version but shows them how much more is possible with the paid version, pushing them to upgrade
Make sense? Lmk your thoughts bro! I can help you with this
Thanks for your suggestions!
Hey,
Have you thought of offering a 7-day trial at least?
Or create a free version with fewer features.
I know tailwind but I don't know about the competition. Anyone else is offering what you are offering?
It seems that 30€ is quite a lot for an extension but again I am not inside the Tailwind offers
Nobody is offering exactly the same features I do as far as I know. But there are other slightly similar extensions in a similar price point.
I might start offering a free version.

This is a great idea! Maybe I could make it easier for the stakeholders and marketing folk to try out changes and suggest it to the dev team
