Should I remove the requirement to create an account to use the free feature of my product?

Hi IH!

72hrs ago I began marketing a free feature of my product on Reddit while I build the paid feature. I have 180 views & 4 signups.

My goal is to drive active users. What are the pros/cons of making a free feature "accountless"?

Thank you for your time!

Guess I'm stating the obvious here, but having to make an account is a hurdle for most users, if they just want to do a quick test drive of the software. That hurdle is removed if the value of the software is instantly obvious, though. But, leaving your e-mail for potential more spam in the inbox and having to remember yet another password, is a thing these days...

I'm not looking for a new job, so I'm not the intended audience. So I probably won't sign up quickly...

For you, the advantage of 'forcing' having an account is clear, you get to know who is using your software and can use that to your marketing advantage. Once the paid feature is rolled out, you can get in touch for 'the sell'.

But you got me thinking; maybe there's a 3-step approach to this, rather than having 2 steps... For example, have 1 (killer) feature that any user can play with and a few more that they need an account for, then the full feature set would need payment. Curious whether anyone has tried this out...

    Good luck!

      I appreciate your thoughts!

I originally wanted to experiment and remove sign ups with the intention of maximizing the number of people using the product. But, I've realized the benefits of registering outweighs the accountless model long-term.

You're right that the value of the product should be more than it costs to register. It's an excellent way to describe a fundamental rule of acquiring users.

      Thank you!

Wow, thanks so much for the heads up. What ad blocker extension are you using? Mine causes no problems.
