I am curating a weekly newsletter called Creativerly in which I share tools and resources, which boost your creativity and productivity. Combined with insights, articles, and learning from the fields of design and tech, this newsletter aims at creative minds.
In the last few days, I was thinking about if it would be a good idea to start a blog as part of the newsletter. I love writing. On my personal blog, I write about my side-projects but also thoughts and feelings about the design and tech scene.
For the new blog, the idea would be to write about apps, tools, resources, etc. In the first place, I want to use this blog to gain some more attraction to my newsletter. Since I started my personal blog back in September 2019 I realized that it drives some traffic to my newsletter. But since my personal blog does not aim mainly at building traffic for my newsletter I thought it might be a good idea to start a separate blog.
What are your thoughts about this idea? Would it be a good idea to invest time and use the blog as traffic source?
Thank you in advance
Just my thoughts. If you are already getting traffic from the personal blog, it may be good to ask how much more would you get from growing a new blog. Maybe the personal one is good enough for this.
I agree with another commenter here that your audience may try to use the blog as a substitute for the newsletter. I've seen people having only some appealing content on their sites to make people sign up for newsletters. (There's also laziness when the audience has to sign up). I guess it depends on how much you prefer having a big newsletter to growing a blog.
Thank you @szmer for your inputs. For now I think I will stick with my personal blog, maybe try to post some more content and then see if it affects my newsletter. I just thought it would be a nice idea to build a brand around my newsletter, without bringing in my personal blog. But what you are writing is so true. Thank you for that!
Generally, a good idea to supplement your newsletter with content. A caveat: the content might cannibalize the newsletter if it is good enough for most of your audience. I would try guest posting in few places first to test if this form of content creation converts to more newsletter subscribers.
That are some great inputs I have not thought about. Thank you for your advice, I will definitely keep this in mind and think about it again.
I say go for it, as it will continue to build your brand. You can talk about the topics you considered, the process you do to blog, and the feedback you are getting. Good luck, the newsletter seems slick.
Thank you for your kind words, always appreciated!
