Should Login and Subscribe be separated?

As I continue to iterate on my sign up flow, I'm wondering if I should keep my current setup, which has logging in (authenticating) and subscribing rolled into the same process, or if it's better to separate the two.

If separated, anyone could login, but if they want pro-features they would have to upgrade from free to Pro, presumably from their account page.

Before I introduce such a change, I'm curious to hear if anyone has strong feelings about this or if anyone has any evidence, empirical or anecdotal, about one way being better than the other?

Thanks in advance for any help or insights you can provide!

Login and account creation must be a different flow from subscription. Here are the reasons

    • It helps to offer free trial

    • It helps when customers have paused the subscription and want to restart

    • It helps when development agency creates account on behalf of their client and client will purchase subscription later

    • It helps in maintaining the code. If your subscription UI has some issues then even the new sign-up will not complete

    • It looks quite cruel when you ask your customer to make payment as soon as they create an account

That's it. Those are the very few reasons I can think off.

My SaaS has these 2 process seperate. I show a notification to customers to remind of the subscription purchase
