Should you use why/how/what for the (short) description of your project? πŸ€”

Hi fellow IndieHackers πŸ‘‹

Brainstorming towards the perfect (short) description for your startup/product/service can be hard.

Therefore, I decided to share my brainstorm session and my way of thinking.

my current description is: "Improve your lifestyle with calendar insights".
It is short, but I feel like it is still too broad, and it doesn't feel actionable to me.

Brainstorm idea (W/H/W)

I tried to get an ultimate advantage, the "why",
But that on itself is unactionable.

So, that is where the "how" comes in,
to create it actionable.

The "what" is just to complete the description.
Without this, it feels like it's missing to me.

User oriented

My focus is on the reader, not the product itself.
In the end the results of the ones who use the startup is most important, not the product itself.
The product is just a "how" to their "why".

I try to do this by adding "you" or "your", to make it feel more personal:

  • Save your time
  • Reach your goals
  • Discover your habits
  • With an extension to your calendar
  • ...

I've shared my 2 personal preferences on Twitter.

It would be amazing if you could like the Tweet of your personal preference.

I also wanted to include my brainstorm notes.
Maybe others who struggle with this can benefit from how I tried to come up with the perfect description.

At the end I've added some results too!

WHY's

Save your time (not actionable)

  • Why we want to save time?
    • To spend more time on other stuff that makes us happier

Reach your goals (not actionable)

  • Why we want to reach goals?
    • To be happier

WHY's 2

Those WHY's seem more vague, but maybe it can help to strengthen the main WHY's.

Discover your habits (semi-actionable, result)

  • Why we want to discover habits?
    • To balance our lifestyle
  • And why we want this?
    • To spend our time exactly how we want
  • And why we want this?
    • To be happier

Balance your lifestyle (semi-actionable, actionable after result)

  • Why we want to balance lifestyle?
    • To be happier

Maximise your progress (not actionable)

  • Why we want to maximise progress?
    • To reach goals (-> to be happier)

Increase your productivity (not actionable)

  • Why we want to increase productivity?
    • To reach goals/save time (-> to be happier)
