Show IH: A hub for DIY motorcycle maintenance
I'm building Helpmech, a platform where amateur or aspiring motorcycle mechanics can get detailed guides for procedures (e.g. oil changes or carb rebuilds) and quickly find accurate information (e.g. torque specs, tire pressure). This idea came from my personal experience with poorly written manuals in archaic formats (scanned PDFs or paper books) and sifting through scattered and often conflicting anecdotal information on forums. I want to centralize this information into wikis and build a community for amateur mechanics to discuss and get help.
That's the goal anyway, but right now I'm stuck. I don't know where to take this project and would love some advice.
Any help would be really appreciated. I've been losing motivation with this project which I'm really bummed about because I LOVE working on it.
Here's some more info on what I've tried so far. Couldn't include it in the post because it was too long.
I'm currently focused on a single but very popular motorcycle, the SV650. This is the bike I currently own, it has a large following and I'm able to personally add lots of information to the wiki.
I've posted in the r/svriders subreddit multiple times and people seem to love the idea, but I can't seem to get anyone to stick. I've started discussions with people who seem very interested, but the interest has faded off and the discussions have gone dormant. I could try to check in with those people, but really not sure what to say.
I wanted this to be a community effort, and thought a good metric to watch would be edits from organic users, but that never happened. Seems like I'm the only person with the motivation to work on these wikis which I'm okay with, but not scalable at all and it would just be so much more fun to work with other people!
Someone mentioned adding comments on pages to ignite discussion, and I've added that but it hasn't caught on.
I have thought about implementing a forum/post system for getting help with builds, but have wondered if that would even be helpful if no one is using the platform. I've also wondered if building a specialized forum platform is the wrong rabbit hole with platforms like Reddit and SVRider Forum already existing.
