This is a site I made to help end this problem that's been popping up for me.
I have a lot of people that I want to reconnect with on a semi-regular basis to discuss important matters and just to hangout. But for whatever reason we always seem to miss eachother.
Now that I've made some pledges to reconnect, it sure feels easier to pick up the phone or setup a calendar invite!!
If you have any comments I'd love to hear them.

That's a really interesting project. I've seen something like that before, I think from levelsio, where the software charges you when you don't reach a goal.
I'd add lower default amount options. 10$ is quite a lot, and I think it's not the actual amount you pay, but more the feeling of loosing money when you don't do something. So imo 10$ won't have a much higher impact than 1$ (this claim needs testing though), but 1$ is a much lower hurdle to start using HitMeUp.club.
To me it seems the utility of something like this is to choose an amount of money that you would be upset to lose. Personally I don't think $1 would be enough to motivate me, in fact I've let subscriptions for $5 or $10 renew even when I wasn't using them out of pure laziness or forgetfulness. But it's an interesting point that maybe choosing a lower starting suggested amount would cause more people to sign up because they see it as less risk if they fail. This may actually make them more likely to fail which could result in more income for the creator.
I agree with you completely. Projects like this are always interesting, because they have to find a balance of earning money, and appearing to want the user to succeed with their goals.
What I want to address is that it is unlikely that I'll just have one person I want to stay in contact with. For me it's more like 10 at least. So putting 100$ on the table is quite a lot for many parts in the world. That's why having lower default options probably will improve engagement.
What will be interesting though is changing the default options based on location. So for people in San Francisco, New York, London and so on show 20$, people in cheaper cost of living areas show 5$ as lowest default option.
