Show IH:How I cut camera rendering latency to 5ms: The "Less is More" pivot for my indie app

I’m the solo developer behind Muxixi Studios, and I’ve been grinding on my life-logging app, TimerCamera+, for the past month. I just pushed v1.5.4, and I wanted to share a major technical pivot that finally made the app "feel" right.

🛑 The Problem: The 4K Trap
Originally, I obsessed over supporting 4K output. But for a life-logging tool meant for quick social sharing (Instagram, WhatsApp, etc.), 4K was overkill. It was causing:

Memory spikes (VRAM was a nightmare on mid-range devices).

Shutter lag that ruined candid moments.

Overheating during long recording sessions.

🚀 The Pivot: Unified 1080p & Performance "Juicing"
In v1.5.4, I made a tough call: Unified 1080p output. By locking the pipeline to 1080p, I could finally "juice" the performance to a pro level.

The Hard Stats:

5ms Latency: Watermark rendering lag dropped from 46ms to 5ms. The preview is now a buttery-smooth 60FPS.

35% VRAM Reduction: Optimized the graphics buffer, making the app rock-solid for long-form logging.

Pro Clarity: Implemented sub-pixel anti-aliasing for timestamps. Even at 1080p, the text looks sharper than many 4K native apps.

📸 Real-World Results
I’ve been testing this with my own family moments (like the "shyest smiles" of my kid at lunch). The response time is now so fast that I never miss a gesture.

I also fixed the notorious front-camera mirroring bug—now what you see in the preview is exactly what you get in the final video, timestamps and all.

💬 Seeking Feedback
I'm currently in that "messy middle" of finding PMF. I’ve updated the app 6 times this month, focusing heavily on the "feel" and "speed."
