Show IH: I built an Android app for using social media without Reels or Shorts

I just published CherryBrew on Indie Hackers.

It’s an Android app for a problem I kept running into as a builder: I still need social media, but I don’t want the parts designed for bottomless scrolling.

I use Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and X for real things:

- DMs

- search

- profiles

- subscriptions

- friends’ posts

- work/distribution

But I kept getting pulled into Reels, Shorts, For You feeds, and sponsored feed loops.

Most digital wellness tools treat this as all-or-nothing: block the app, set a timer, delete the app, or rely on willpower. CherryBrew is trying a narrower approach: keep the useful surfaces, hide the spiral where possible, and make social media boring enough to use intentionally.

It’s early, Android-only, and imperfect. The core question I’m testing is whether selective blocking is actually more useful than full app blocking for people who still need social platforms for work or relationships.

I’d love blunt feedback from other builders:

1. Does this framing make sense, or does it sound like a weaker app blocker?

2. If you use social media for distribution, would this solve a real problem?

3. What would make you trust an app like this enough to install it?
