🎓 Show IH: I built GeniusAIx – a Chrome extension that turns YouTube into a real learning experience
I’ve been working on a Chrome extension called GeniusAIx that makes YouTube a more interactive and retention-focused learning platform.
The problem it solves: YouTube is great for discovery, but terrible for retention. You watch an explanation or tutorial, and it just passes by. There’s no space to pause, reflect, or ask questions — especially if something doesn’t make sense.
What GeniusAIx does:
Lets you ask questions in a sidebar powered by GPT (context-aware)
Adds Quizzes based on the video content
Summarize the video to save time upfront (upcoming)
It’s designed for people who are actively learning — not just watching. I built it because I often found myself watching 30-minute tutorials and with not being aware about what would I get out of it. Or not having a way to question their learning right within youtube. The goal is to bridge the gap between watching and actually understanding.

great idea! Might just have to use it for myself. This would be amazing in the education space and i feel that it really does have a useful side to it. Ever though about trying to advertise this towards the education sector?

Pretty ingenious in my opinion. I definitely learn better when it is active versus just passively listening to a video that I often get distracted from anyways. I'm not currently studying something but I would bet some students would find value in this.
As a side note, this might be something that ebook/audiobook listeners would benefit from. Maybe you can create something separate for either ebook creators (b2b) or ebook listeners (b2c). For the b2b case, you can sell your service for people who want to generate quick quiz scripts for their recordings. For the b2c case, you can quiz users per chapter of an e-book.
I think Sumarization has value outside of studying. How many times do we spend minutes on the video before we realize it was really a click bait. I've added Summarization as well now, when paired with the ability to question the video, you can almost know anything within seconds. Imagine the minutes/hours saved!

This is super clever — love how you’re transforming passive watching into active learning. Tools like this are exactly what we need to bridge entertainment and education. Curious: does it support timestamped notes or export to something like Notion?

I just added Summarization and smart timestamp categorization of the video, which you can use to jump to relevant sections. When paired with the ability to question the video (ask anything via chat), you can know/figure out what you want to know quickly.
While export to Notion isn't available right now. I did add "Copy" and "Download" for the Summary, which can then be added to Notion/any other tool.
I think adding share/export is a really nice idea. Thank you for your feedback :)

I have added the summarization feature (with option to get brief/detailed summary), along with timestamped categorization of the video, to allow easy jump between the sections. Do give this a try and let me know how you find it!
I'd like to add personalized learning path, and progress tracking too. I was hoping to see more usage before investing in those paths!

Hey! Really love seeing all these indie projects here.
I’ve also been building something recently to scratch my own itch: I watch a lot of long-form YouTube content (lectures, interviews, podcasts…) and I needed a better way to extract transcripts for note-taking, summarizing, and feeding into Notion / Obsidian.
Ended up building a simple web tool that can extract full transcripts from any YouTube video, playlist, or channel — export them to clean text, CSV, JSON, with timestamps, metadata, etc. Saves me hours of painful copy-pasting.
If anyone's dealing with YouTube content for learning or knowledge management, happy to share a link if useful.
