Show IH: I put my personal finance journey live on the internet

I just launched an online community I'm aiming to build and have been playing around with some feature ideas.

The community is in the FIRE space. (Financial Independence/Retire Early).

Anyway, with that I literally posted my financial journey on the internet, total transparency. Let me know what you think!

Cool site. I like the idea of FIRE (but stupidly trying to get there big bang style).

    1. 1

Hey Rory, what's 'big bang style?' and thanks for the feedback! :) Any features you think would be helpful for those interested in FIRE?

      1. 2

Big bang == Make a lot of money in short period of time... gonna check it out more but simplicity of the site is good

        1. 1

Sounds good, I saw you signed up. 🙃

Ha, I haven't heard that term before. That's basically my goal too. Are you working on anything right now to help you get there?

  2. 2

You need to post this on reddit's FIRE subreddit ASAP.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/financialindependence/

    1. 2

Eh, I actually did and the mods got pissed off and removed it. I think it'll have to hit the FI subreddit naturally.

Go go go go bro @MattEhr!

Congrats on launching. Love the product!

One thought I had is, I find profiles of people (like yours) much more interesting than the discussion board. Maybe there's a way to highlight profiles in the homepage?

    1. 1

Yes Alejo! I'm working on adding that now. I'm also adding a brief walkthrough after signup for a more tailored experience.

Thanks for the feedback! Please feel free to share other things you'd like to see added.

Did you happen to sign up? (just curious)

It can be addictive. I loved the idea and the website.

    1. 1

Thanks Mehmet! I agree, it can be addictive. I'm planning on adding lots of features, I know the UX was slightly bare for now. But i'll send updates as new things are released.

      Any feedback you might have?

Nice idea, great execution. (What's this built on Matt?)

    Never heard about "FIRE" before.

If this gets popular enough, the data behind it is worth a lot!

    1. 2

      Built in Ruby.

'FIRE' is - Financially Independent/Retire Early. Although looking into it you'll find it breaks up into many different groups of people who are working on "FIRE".

There's FatFI (Want to not be living frugally). LeanFI (Ok with a frugal living), BaristaFI (have enough to 'retire' but also ok with working as a Barista), there are more.

I plan to write up a big blog post today, explaining all of it.

I agree the data would be worth alot. But I'd like to monetize in other ways. I'd like to not pawn off user data to the highest bidder. (Trust killer)

      1. 1

I'm relatively new to the FIRE stuff and look forward to this blog post. I haven't heard of the other FatFI, LeanFI, etcs before. Congrats on launch. I'll be keeping an eye on it!

        1. 1

Awesome. I saw you signed up. I'll send updates to new things I'm adding. If you have any feedback, feel free to email me.

Nice! Huge fan of the FIRE movement. I'm semi-retired at half-FIRE. Hoping I can build something worthwhile before I have to get a job ;-)

    1. 1

That’s awesome. I’d be interested in hearing more about your ‘half-FIRE’ + what you’re working on and your end game.

Would you be up for an interview I can publish on the site?

      1. 1

Send me an e-mail! I'll probably be able to find some time next week. I'd be happy to post some data on your site as well.

        1. 1

Awesome Andrew! I'll shoot you the email tomorrow and that'd be great. Data like this from real people will really help people make strides towards financial freedom.

Man, if this site can help people make the right decisions then we'd improve lots of lives. :)

Yes! - You're right, I've learned a lot on my journey so far.

I've turned my focus to build a community in a space I care about. (financial independence) which goes hand in hand with just making cool software projects instead of being tied to an income from a day job (at some point).

still very v1, I'll be correcting a lot of this. Currently writing a user on-boarding walkthrough.

Can you also place the message entry as a modal or at the bottom.

Which are you referring to? not sure

.) Boards like IH rely on a small core of power users who power most discussions: people like @harlem, @alchemist and @thomasm1964. How are you going to find an attract these users? I'm sure this is a power law, i.e 1 power user for every 1000 non-registered readers.

I think this will likely happen over time. I plan to engage other influencers in this space who maybe want some more engagement.

Current goals right now though are just writing useful content and improving the site.

I totally agree. and I think managing expenses could be a great tool to add to the platform. I've made a note of it.
