Show us how you start and end your newsletter issue

👋 Hi Indie Hackers,

it‘s a pity that we can‘t subscribe to every newsletter. We miss out on a lot of things. But what we can do is to use the power of the community to amplify our know-how.

Today I wondered what the optimal start and end of a newsletter issue should look like? Is there a common sense or do even some best practices exist that improve conversions?

I start every issue pretty simple with:

👋 Hi Everyone,

The ending is a bit more complex as I try to reference my Twitter account:

See you soon.

– Dennis

Now I‘m curious how you start and end each issue of your newsletter?
Tells may be why you‘ve chosen those words and how they developed over time.

My newsletter is a weekly curated roundup of links to tech resources and apps.

Each issue opens with a short introduction, op-ed, or commentary on one of the topics covered in the issue. Next, there are 7 links grouped into 5 topics with headings. Finally, a final section has a couple of lines thanking readers and inviting them to share the newsletter or support me.

The intro intentionally starts by getting to the point without any greetings or salutations. Although these are supposed to be personal in newsletters, they feel canned to me as we all know the personalization of newsletter is artificial and limited. It's a formal, impersonal, "dear valued customer" kind of personalization.

So I might as well start like a less personal blog post or magazine article. Which is what I do.

I used to start with a personal note, but after changing the format of my newsletter, I removed the personal note.

Pretty pleased with the way I end each issue though! Here's what I do:

    👋 Before you go

That looks really lovely crafted. I like it a lot. Some people may argue that Emojis are overused. I‘m not one of them. 😅

at first1000.substack.com we dont have an intro, I usually dive into the issue. But for the ending I use "That's it for today, See you next Saturday 😉 "

Do you think that an intro would become necessary at some time?

Use some COVID-19 Isolation greetings and endings, always works a charm ;)

Interesting. Did you get any feedback in regards to your longish introduction?
