Sift → Find and keep product market fit

https://hellosift.com/

Hey all, I have a few questions about the landing page for Sift – and am free to any general feedback you want to give.

https://hellosift.com/

  1. What's missing from the landing page that you'd like to see?
  2. Does the product resonate with you? Why or why not?
  3. If you thought it looked useful but didn't sign up, why didn't you?

Thanks for the help in advance!

    Hi!

You're lying, you already know your landing is perfect and just want us to request access (which I did).

On the things you could improve, you might scare a lot of your visitors with this Elizabeth Warren photo.

A demo of the widget would be super cool to add. Anyways, the landing's perfect and I hope the product is too!

    Wishing you the best,

    Alex

Haha, merci beaucoup, Alex! I very much did not feel good about the landing page since I've been watching lots of people on FullStory skip past things and bounce in 10 seconds. What made you sign up?

Good call on the photo. It was cheeky, but clear over clever every day.

Also agree on demo of the widget. Right now there's no way with the widget to follow up with visitors, but I'm planning to add an email capture at the end of a survey for visitors, which would actually turn this into lead generation (for me and for my customers!).

The fact that it's an early access and not an established product might make them go.

Anyways, you can't convert everyone. Most people just look at your landing and aren't potentiel customers. What is your conversion rate?

What made me sign-up is the 50-60% response rate you advertise. I'd be very happy if 60% of my free trial users told me what features they don't like/understand. It's way easier to click on a feedback button than to start a conversation with us on our chatbox.

I was just concerned about one thing: wouldn't Sift duplicate my chatbox widget?

The fact that it's an early access and not an established product might make them go.

This is a big concern for me: that being "early access" or "invite-only" is turning people away because it might feel unfinished. It feels unfinished to me, of course, but I've heard very much the opposite from my current customers.

What made me sign-up is the 50-60% response rate you advertise.

Awesome. I'm hopeful it continues like that and was honestly shocked it was anywhere near that high. I'm also guessing the simplicity of the three button clicks is what makes the response rate so high.

I was just concerned about one thing: wouldn't Sift duplicate my chatbox widget?

As for the chat widget, I use both myself. Personally, I'm an Intercom user. And I'd like Sift to eventually have deeper and deeper integration with live chat and support products. At first that might mean something like one-way Zapier integration from us to them. Then some sort of two-way integration. Maybe even eventually – for the more platform-focused tools – a way to embed surveys directly into the chat widget itself.

It's also not clear on the landing page right now, but the goal is to make the Sift feedback widget way more flexible than having it simply live in the bottom corner of the page. I should be able to get feedback on a particular part of my UI, and have the widget call it out and adapt to the environment. (I can even see a future where we help you build fake doors in your app to gauge interest/intent without simply asking for preference).

My preference is to use tools that are really focused on one thing and do that thing really well. Swiss army knives are not me. That means my philosophy is that Sift should be able to coexist alongside other tools.

In the long-term, I think products that are built into your UI like live chat, support, feedback, etc, are going to need to adapt to a world in which they coexist alongside each other (and your UI!) harmoniously and don't compete for space and attention.

Honestly, I think there are even startup opportunities here. For example, it's easy to lose track of all the messages someone might be getting between your newsletter, onboarding, live chat, support, transactional emails, and so on. I would love to have something that just shows me what most users experience in terms of tempo of messaging from my product.

          1. 2

I also really like products that do one thing and well. However, it isn't easy to draw the line between what's 100% necessary and what's not.

While a broker can avoid beeing a news aggregator, it can hardly not have a Charting software.

But yes, integrating with chat tools might be a super idea.
Anyways, the problem with your startup idea is that there's dozens if not hundreds of clients profiles. You couldn't test all possible pathways, especially with modern email automation.

Or, could you? Maybe we could build some sort of "email proxy" that would list all emails a company sends? With a list per customer? And general open rates?

            Mh, to pursue!

    Hi Josh,

Congrats on the release! Your landing page looks great - very clean and simple. I think I understand the value proposition well.

    1. I think it would be great to visualize exactly how this product will look once integrated. A screenshot should suffice to answer questions like: Is it a modal that pops up? Does it appear like a floating feedback button at the right side (Hotjar)? Does it appear like a floating chat button at the bottom right (Drift)?

    2. I think the product does resonate. I'm still in the process of getting my early adopters. Sometimes folks just sign up and leave, and I'm left wondering why. I feel this tool could help with that. (Currently, I'm trying to solve the problem using Hotjar, MixPanel and HeapAnalytics)

    3. I wasn't sure how this differed from Hotjar. I see that it might be a simpler feedback mechanism with 2 primary fields (Happiness & Importance), but I'm not totally convinced that that approach is much better / effective.

That's about it. Hope that feedback was useful! :)

Hey Pradeep, thanks for the feedback here! I'm going to use your numbering above to reply in-kind and keep things simpler.

      1. Would a demo in-app as mentioned by @Alextousss solve this, or do you think it still needs something else? Would this screenshot help: https://cl.ly/7d3a481f70b0 ?
      2. I have a ton more questions about this than I think I can reasonably ask here. Do you mind shooting me an email (in my IH profile) so I can ask more?
      3. What doubts do you have about how this works vs something like HotJar? And to help clarify, the primary difference I think exists between this and something like HotJar (which I'm realizing is problematically not mentioned anywhere on the landing page) is that the satisfaction/importance paradigm gives you a solid way to compare all your features / ideas / customer problems and then prioritize them. I wrote a bunch about this here: https://hellosift.com/blog/prioritize-your-features-by-customer-need/.

This feedback was super useful, so thanks a ton for taking the time to give it!

        1. That screenshot is perfect. Does it work in tandem with Drift? Lots of companies love that bottom right spot. :)

        2. Sure, I'll send a quick email.

        3. TBH, I don't use the Feedback tool by HotJar. The reason is the design. I don't want a floating button on the right-hand corner IN ADDITION TO my Drift chat icon on the bottom right, because 2 floating widgets would clutter my UI quite a bit. Otherwise, I do think it would be nifty to get feedback from users.

Right now I actually like it in the bottom left, so it's fixed there. In the future, it'll be user preference where it goes.

And shamelessly copying myself from a reply above:

Currently there's no icon to open/close it, but I do plan on adding one. Display this, however, will be user preference. I think it would be reasonable for us to add a way for you to allow users to trigger the opening through JavaScript, either by allowing them to do so inside Drift, or in a link in your app or something.

Once we add a history of a user's past feedback – or an ability to reply to that feedback – a way to open/close the widget manually becomes more important. And continually high response rates will come from a user base that feels engaged and understood. Sift shouldn't be an annoyance for your users, but a way for you both to grow together. After all, you're building a product because you want to make your users awesome.
