It took a friend to suggest an intuitive feature that improved conversion from free users to paying customers.
I launched Moonpad.io in the middle of January.
Early on, I realized that Moonpad would need to offer a 30-day free trial to users so that they could try the tool and see its value.
Moonpad is a smart privacy-focused web analytics tool, and the more data it has, the easier it is for people to see its value prop.
By the end of February, the free trial period was ending for the early users.
But my message telling these users that their free trial is over and nudging them to become paid customers didn't help much.
Frankly, I was too scared to cut off access.
Eventually, I gave users an extra week and put up a paywall since the free trial was over.
Even though users couldn't access the stats and features, in the background, Moonpad was still collecting data, so when the user paid, there were no data gaps.
The conversion was okay. We got our first paying customer on March 6.
Then I spoke with Chris (@1dolinski), and he had this brilliant idea to add the stats users are missing out on if they don't pay.

Just this simple feature, significantly improved our conversion rate and we hit $100+ MRR today.
My key learning is that if you have a free trial, try to put up a paywall which provides a personalized view into what they are missing out on by not upgrading.
Intuitively this makes so much sense. But needed a friend to point it out before I did it on Moonpad.
