I agree with you that having a mentor is an unmatched advantage in comparison to learn coding all by oneself.
But having a mentor is just a privileg that only a few people have.
I would highly suggest you looking up well known open source projects written in the desired language you're trying to learn.
Always asking yourself why and how others do things and trying to understand their solutions is a very good thing to do to become a better and more versatile coder.

You can start with the intro to programming courses on either udacity (https://www.udacity.com/course/introduction-to-python--ud1110) or coursera (https://www.coursera.org/learn/learn-to-program). Both of those platforms have many other free courses
