I've been leaning heavy into Discord for the past couple of months and can sum up what I've learned into, "Slack for teams, Discord for communities".
I'm in a popular Slack community for small SAAS businesses and a couple months ago we all got this notification on our Slack dashboard that said something to the likes of, "Your trial plan is going to expire soon, upgrade for premium features."
I remember thinking, "that's embarassing for these community moderators" Mainly because they're trying to uphold a brand image of a reputable community (they also run a VC fund) and their Slack community members are all being reminded that the community runs on a free plan.
This was what that message conveyed to everyone:
"Hey! This community can't afford premium!".
It wasn't a great look.
I also agree with you since discord isn't as limited as slack. I think it's quite obvious that Slack has been targeting teams and companies since the beginning and the communities that happened to settle on slack did it just because their audience was already there
Yeah that makes sense - go where your audience is! I use slack for one of my saas businesses and it works well for that.
Totally agree. I'm part of a few communities on Slack and the constant reminders that it's free plan make it feel pretty amateur.
Recently launched Paternal, a Discord community for Dads! Finding it much more enjoyable than if I'd launched it on Slack. The entire platform feels much more like it was build for a community. Plus, the special community settings are excellent.
Nice! Yeah I feel bad for people that launched communities on Slack and are now realizing they should've used Discord.. good decision!
