So... About Those Points... (What to Do After 1k?!)
So... a week ago I crosse the 1,000 points mark here on Indie Hackers.
... I know, I know... self-congratulatory and all that nonsense...
But, seriously... a few things... and thoughts... ...:
- Do the points actually "mean" anything? Do they qualify anything on the backend?
- Anyway that I could see the actual number / figure?
- Can I use them for something? Like... giving some of my points away to other users?
- If it's meaningless... is it still useful?
- I like points!
- I hate points!
- I'm undecided about points!
- Yes, I love counting stats (or at least acknowledging that they are fun and potentially useful)... but, i know it's not the point.
- So... what now?

Points do a few things. But not too many thing. They'll probably do more things in the future, but right now it's just a few. But there are definitely some things happening because of your points that wouldn't happen if you had slightly fewer points.

Yea, good question... I just assumed they were just a surface-level social proof. "This person has created this much value on this platform" kind of thing.
Interesting thought to be able to transfer them somehow. π§

I thought about that too, but then it wouldn't make a great "social proof" or "authority" measure. Because if you're super generous with your points, and you spend all of them... you look like a n00b who hasn't gotten any points or offered any value yet in the community.
but, if you're super-generous it means you have earned a ton of social currency.
Yea... but how would people see that? I mean, it shouldn't really matter. I think the point of the points is to give social proof... but I definitely like the idea of points being a form of currency or transferrable value better.

Right. Just trying to think up what the original intent is vs what it could be.
i gave this some thought over the weekend and i couldn't come up with anything.

For me - it shows that someone is active around here and I should consider following him/her.
For 1k point owner - well, you can convert it to the blueberries and sell it. 4 points = 1 blueberry. Not sure about the price of blueberries these days though.

I think blueberries are historically expensive haha... Might be more like 10 pts = 1 blueberry.
Probably easier to have a BlueberryCoin ICO so we can track the actual exchange rate.

It's an indicator of effort/activity, not the actual impact.
But it's based on how many people "like" your posts... So isn't it technically your impact?
I upvote based on how valuable the comment is. So I look at it as a peer-value metric. I may not be buying someoneβs product or they mine, but exchange of value can still occur in sharing insight and guidance.

Well, in my mind comment and upvote are different and it very much depends. I may comment on something I strongly disagree with to express an alternative opinion; would not upvote in that case. Sometimes I read some super helpful comment, and I will reply and upvote.
But beyond that my internal thresholds are low and I tend to upvote a lot because it doesn't cost anything and results in a positive feedback loop and hopefully in the macro leads to more engagement, which is what I am here for.

Haha not sure if itβs sarcasm π€£. Entrepreneur impact is not measured by like-ability but actual value delivered to customers.
I mean an impact on a fellow entrepreneur. Like @MF706 said, if I read something insightful on here, I'm going to 'like' it because it impacted my mindset going forward.

Good question! I'm having the same issue.... just joking. I only have like 160pts so I'll reach that issue some day. It will also be cool if IndieHackers adds a feature where you can see a log of how you've gotten each of your points. Maybe a feature in a coming update @csallen? π

No BuildFaster is a website product where you can buy easy-to-use HTML/CSS themes that will help beginner/amateur developers out A LOT. btw I just made up "Point Tracer" right now so I might now make it, but I was just requesting to the community for it to be made. I am more of a web design/dev type of guy.
