Soccer Portal - Looking for New Ideas!!
I have the URL www.footyportal.com am looking to develop a website around soccer (and other sports in the future), but with a new twist incorporating AI/ML into the site. e.g. sentiment analysis for tweets on soccer clubs, players, fans etc. Heat maps, topic analysis, predictions etc etc.
I would really appreciate any ideas on how to differentiate the site and what content would be interesting.

I've been looking to create something very similar for fun - it's something I've wanted to do for awhile. The biggest hurdle seems like acquiring the tracking data to create heat maps, etc. Statsbomb and Wyscout have free small datasets available, but obviously not enough for a full product. The event data could easily be acquired through scraping. Do you intend on getting tracking data through a provider?
Also, you should fix your website. When clicking on a team you're openly exposing the dbhost, port, username, password and more (looks like a bad host name). :)

What are you looking for, actual play data? You can only derive that from visual data which obviously is all copyrighted unless you go to very old stuff (like 15-20 years). So scraping certainly would not be legal. Most national football associations at least in Europe are very protective on these things.
General player metrics/performance data you can maybe ciffer off from Football Manager the computer game which has very accurate numbers somehow but even that is probably legally a grey area.
You could use maybe the online live text commentary / match report from the game and record this and then try with NLP to get somewhere which is a lot harder but I am not sure what the right issue is with that but maybe more open than the visual. Only other source is getting fan recording inside the stadium.
Or you will have to buy in but that's not going to be cheap for sure.
Not play data as that market is saturated, I was thinking more text analytics of fans comments, articles, forum posts, tweets, insta posts etc. Providing a dashboard for fans of different team
Okay I see. So basically an intelligent feed forward harvester that can put together information related to a specific football team from different sources and repackage that? And generate some kind of trend?
Exactly, you got it! Problem is API feeds are costly and scraping is not scalable. if you do it for soccer, you can easily extend for other sports, the one-stop shop for fans to see what is trending for their team
Well instead of scrapping you could come up with an initial list of all important web sites/social media accounts for each team or in general and simply add notification on these so you get the data pushed so you act like an aggregator. Instead of trying to pull which I do agree is probably doe snot scale unless you are a internet search engine company.
Obviously you could also try to discover potential new sources though links they feed from if they appear several times.
I love this idea and have thought about it myself in the past. A single interface with multiple feeds from the fan perspective would be great.

So, you would be adding AI gained from the chatter and provide an overall sentiment on the content or the audience?
I was working on something which pulled data from various sources but not with the AI element - shelved that project as have some client work ongoing.

Yes that's correct, pull the source content and then perform AI text analytics on it and display to users. Problem is lots of APIs are costly e.g. twitter so some investment is needed upfront. Do you have any ideas on what other sources we could use just initially to get the site up and running?
