Social Media
The problems with social media apps, like FaceBook, Twitter, etc. are all well known, at this point and alternatives continue to pop up... Issues with censorship, data privacy, and user ownership are all big concerns for users, but they need to generate revenue somehow, right? What if there was a platform that was more transparent, responsible, had more concise & consistent content guidelines, and actually PAID users a stipend for their data and the interactions and ad revenue they generate? Just an idea I've been kicking around with some fellow devs....
It's an interesting thought. This is my first impression.
People care most about where their friends are and they are willing to overlook a lot of those privacy concerns to be in the place that has everyone they know. Getting users to switch over is difficult. There have been a few attempts at this, and most don't survive very long.
Paying users money for use of their data is something that was talked about a lot with GDPR but I don't think being paid for the abuse of your privacy would make you feel any better about the abuse. I think it might just highlight how gross it is and bring it to users' attention too often.
Presumably, the clearer and easier it is to opt-out, the less revenue generated. The payout would then incentivize users to stay opted in but then you haven't solved any privacy issues. You've just figured out if $0.50 a month shuts people up.
