Software as a service ideas

Hey guys!

I'm a freelance web developer looking to become more entrepreneurial and independent, so I can over the long term stop selling my work by the hour.

I find the hardest part of the whole thing is not actually doing the work, but finding an idea that I think is worth committing to.

How do you guys come up with your ideas and where do you go for inspiration?

I'd love to hear any and all advice you may have :) Cheers!

I am in the same situation as you are. it's been a long time for me just brainstorming and thinking of useful ideas/solutions (that people are willing to pay for).

In my case I already built 2 web platforms (neither of them is SaaS), one was a bit successful Dupaws.com, it makes me almost 2.4k USD a month, while the other platform Mate.ae was a flop. I changed the later to google ads revenue it wasn't worth the effort.

Now I am thinking about creating my first SaaS product. I spend a lot of time looking at producthunt and IH looking for ideas, but I realized that probably what I need to do instead is to find an industry that is hot right now, i.e e-commerce omni-channel inventory/sales and see if I can build a 10x better product (which will not be easy considering how competition are doing).

It's also important to remember that 10x better that doesn't mean 10x more features that are unrelated to the core product, as I see people who think they have a better product just because they keep adding useless features lol.

    Tips that I think useful:

1- find a problem that related to you and how the solution will make your work better/more efficient.

2- make sure you like the topic/audience you are solving a problem for (as you'll have long chats with them later on and that can be daunting if you dont relate to them).

3- build MVP quickly and test your idea before going deeper into polishing your product, sometimes people just wont be interested in paying for your solution so no need to spend more effort into it.

4- Spend some time researching existing products and solutions in the market before starting. I remember a funny guy telling me he wants to create the "first" SMS notification service for companies and he didn't know about Twilio. That guy was living in his own world.

When researching existing companies you will be discouraged since there are solutions to almost everything, however sometimes an existing solution might be too expensive for small companies and you might have people who will be willing to use your product even if there is a bigger/better competitor elsewhere.

5- Dont ask your family/friends to validate your idea, as 99% of the cases they will tell you it's great and go for it lol.

    Hope that helps

If you have ideas go validate them by talking to potential customers. Read The Mom Test for information on how to talk to them.

Usually problems that clients have at my web agency. For example, a client was struggling to justify the cost of a certain review platform and wanted a quick way to add reviews to their website. We built Reviewdrop to cater for the small/medium business market.

I am still adept at databases and believe that they are the basis of almost everything in modern programming. So in terms of development, I would recommend database courses (https://career.softserveinc.com/en-us/learning-and-certification/directions-15). I don't know if you can take any others, but I've taken courses here myself, and I can say that I'm happy with the result. It's just advice, my friend, and I think it will be relevant for years to come.

I watch people and myself. Where are we willing to have something better? Where are we stuck with? What's wrong and can be improved?
Whenever I see something like that I write it down. It may be an idea or just an observation. Eventually, I gathered so many ideas (including SaaS) that I came up to the book of ideas of SaaS applications (see my profile).

Tip: Pick something you still enjoy working on even when it has absolute zero traction. Because that's what's going to happen in the beginning.

The trick is to not give up too soon.

    Good luck!

I guess I'm lucky enough that I don't have that problem. I have too many ideas. I think the important thing is to just do it once you have an idea. Validate, then go hard and bring it to market.

I find a direct correlation to when I am reading a business paperback and how often I am updating my idea notes.

Generally I believe creativity comes from combining 2 or more things you’ve experienced, so exposing yourself to new things can help with ideation.

Hi Marcos - I'm the founder of https://floom.app, a platform that makes it really easy to monetize SaaS. I have a list of products that I'm looking to build, or work with someone to build: https://www.notion.so/robmoore/0c83f62cfe3d4f8498846d55a7483361?v=11270626b3974863972cf3d927aa614c

Get in touch if you're interested in building any of these. We can work together to build it, or if you build it yourself, you're entitled to all of the revenue - Floom only takes 10% for early adopters

It is appropriate for a site that sells foreign goods, places the informer with the exchange rate and the calculator-converter, but absolutely no need for such a site, for example, the weather informer. On a severe business, the resource is also wholly unnecessary chats or forums, unless the site concept does not allow online communication with employees of your company. The rules of a good site require only software testing services. If you place on your site delivery calculator, the result of your calculations must be accurate. If the calculation data calculator gives wrong or does not work at all "under" a specific OS or browser, then the usefulness of such a calculator for visitors is zero

What do you say about the design of the site?
