Software Engineering Manager looking for new projects

Hey Colin,

I'm an Engineering Manager too, currently working on CodeCrafters, a site that packages "Build your own X" tutorials into fun programming challenges.

I'm looking for help in one or more of these areas:

1. Challenge Content

The first three challenges were Redis, Docker & Git. What should the next challenges be? What content is likely to attract experienced developers? How do I structure these so that they can be attempted in byte-sized stages?

Would it be possible to tackle harder content, like 'Build your own Database', in this format?

2. Challenge Experience

Currently, I'm running early access trials for these challenges. I add a slight competitive tinge by using a leaderboard, and a discord bot that streams real-time updates. I don't want gamification to get in the way of a fun challenge experience though.

How do I make the challenge a social experience, but not so much so that fear of failure prevents one from participating? Maybe adding a bit of anonymity to the leaderboard would help? Other than a position in the leaderboard, are there other incentives I can give people? Maybe badges like 'First to complete a stage', 'Most attempts on one stage'?

3. Monetization

I haven't tackled this at all yet, focusing on getting at least 100 people (already at ~30 people) to try out the challenges first. I do have some ideas in this area though, would love to bounce them off someone else.

Should I target developers, or employers? If developers, what would the pricing strategy be? Per challenge, or a subscription with access to all challenges? If employers, what angle should I approach them from? Using CodeCrafters as a recruiting tool? Or a training tool?
