Sold my extension!

Hi everyone!

I built https://dashone.app/ last year and recently sold it. It was a small amount of money but still feels great! I'm happy to answer any questions that could help others.

I'm also working on another extension in the productivity space. It's too early to share details as I'm still experimenting, but if you're available to jump on a video call to check it out and give feedback, please lmk.

Great job! Are you able to share details on how you sold it?

    • What was the process to transfer the extension?
    • Did you use a broker?
    • Did you come up with a price based on users?

This is the first time I've actually sold a project and the process was fairly straightforward.

The buyer emailed me directly. I initially suspected it was a phishing email but after some research concluded it was legit and replied back. The initial asking price was too low so we negotiated over a few emails and landed on a price. I had 1.2k+ users but no revenue. I also learned from the buyer that he was primarily interested in the tech/code and wanted to add more features quickly and sell to a bigger market. The overall process was straightforward - he wired the money and then we got on a zoom call to transfer the assets(domain, code, hosting etc)

        Super interesting!

How well-written (spaghetti-free) was your code? And how was the transfer process like? Did you explain the key concepts again or just handed over the code?

When I built it, I spent a good amount of time on architecture and code organization, making it easy to add new widgets. I did give them a quick overview. My stack was React, Redux which the buyer was well familiar with, so it made it easy. I also offered to help in the future if they had any followup questions.

Thanks for sharing! Glad it was straightforward.

Awesome extension, I am going to give it a try.

Very useful extenstion!! Why did you sell it?

Unfortunately, I couldn't invest enough time to add new features and was worried its going stagnant. The new owner has big plans for it and I have confidence they'd execute on it.

I see, What have you been working on lately that you didn't have time for working on that extension?

Congrats! Did it have a business model?

Congratulations!! Could you share how you got the first users for the extension? The Chrome Webstore is very crowded and it is very hard to get noticed.

You're right, it is. I did all the usual suspects - post on IH, maker sites, PH etc. My biggest source was actually the Chrome Webstore. The Webstore occasionally showcase some extensions. I was lucky enough to be picked in that and I got around 200k impressions/day via the Webstore search for about a week - that really helped jumpstart initial adoption. So it's critical that you spend time to make the extension polished(design) and bug free. A good description helps too.
