Sure.

1. Wait till Dec 1st. The AppStore is about to get the biggest update in a while, including the ranking system.
2. Make sure the app tech is up to date with Shopify standards; they "punish" apps that use old methods.
3. Don't look only at the install number, also ask for a report on the Shopify plan of those stores. It's very easy to get installs from stores on trial. But once you have installs from store on the Shopify higher plan (Advanced and Plus), that's a great indicator for having clients that will pay easily.
