I've been building solo for about 5 years — full-stack, mostly shipping and moving on to the next thing. This time I wanted to actually see one through past launch.
The problem: "What font is this?" is a question I kept hitting as a dev — looking at a site I liked, wanting to know the exact font. Existing options were either paid desktop apps, digging through DevTools computed styles, or uploading a screenshot to a font-matching site and hoping.
What I built: FontSnap — a Manifest V3 Chrome extension. Hover over any text on any page, a floating card shows you the font family, weight, and size instantly. If it's one of 1,581 Google Fonts, it identifies the source and lets you copy the CSS import in one click.
Technical bits that were harder than expected:
getComputedStyle() gets you the rendered font, but matching that back to a named, sourced font (especially Google Fonts loaded via various CDN patterns) needed a bundled list of all 1,581 families to cross-reference — there's no reliable API for this that doesn't hit CORS issues.
Chrome Web Store review process was its own project: permission justifications, a privacy policy, data disclosure. Ended up stripping broad host permissions down to just activeTab + scripting + storage — reviewers want minimal footprint, and honestly it's the right call anyway.
Numbers so far: It's live, no marketing push yet — 19 impressions, 10 installs (USA, mix of ChromeOS/Windows). That's a ~52% conversion, which floored me. I have no idea if that holds at scale, but it's telling me the concept lands fast once someone actually sees it.
Where I'm stuck: distribution. I can build; getting eyeballs is the skill I haven't exercised. This IH post + a Product Hunt launch are literally the first two distribution moves I've ever made for anything I've built.

Would genuinely appreciate feedback — both on the extension itself and on what worked for you when you were at the "10 installs, now what" stage.
