Preface:
Building stuff with AI is just fun. I enjoy playing around with the different technologies available and I genuinely like to learn new things. I've also been toying with the idea of building something purely SMS based. No app, no interface, just chatbot and I giant switch statement. So, over the weekend a week or two ago, I built TextGPT, a SMS only way to interact with ChatGPT.
Fast Forward:
Today, as I crank away at dumb bugs and crappy corporate tasks at my 9-5, I notice upward trending traffic on my little 2 page site for TextGPT. I think nothing of it and go on about my day. Early afternoon, I check again and see its still trending upwards and I finally take a quick dive to see where this traffic is coming from.
ProductHunt...
But I didn't launch on PH, whats going on here?! I get to PH and I scroll down a bit and to my surprise, there it was, TextGPT launched today. 30 upvotes, about 5 or 6 comments too.
If TextGPT was a complete product and I was trying to push hard on it, I might have let it slide. Extra traffic never hurt anyone. But the truth is that its not done, it is super early MVP. It currently only support US and Canadian numbers and responses can be a bit inconsistent (still playing to gpt).
Anyways, I rushed to contact support and ask that they take it down so I can launch later when I am better prepared. Lucky for me they did just that and rather quickly too.
Would you have done something differently? Did I totally fuck up and should have just let it slide and claimed it later?
I want to add one great thing here is that got an idea your product is good and people love your initial version and if you launch it on product hunt with proper plan you can get the desire result for your product.
Wish you best of luck for your future lanch on PH.
