When we started working on Unicorns Club, we chose X.com as the channel to share our product development journey publicly. Our goal was to introduce the startup community to our product before its official launch.
In November 2023, I took charge of my empty X account. It took a month to reach our first 200 followers. I tried various strategies, and once some started working, my colleague shared the effort with me.
Today, my X account have 1,500 followers. I receive a lot of supportive comments and likes every time I post a new milestone. But let's look at the hard work behind each new number. This text will help you decide if #buildinpublic is worth the time and effort.

On average, our account grows by 9% weekly. We experienced rapid growth at the start, but we couldn't maintain that pace as more time was needed for product work. The growth rate fluctuates from 1.5% a week to 25%.

The screenshot shows that about half of our growth is organic—users who find our account through posts. While this seems positive, many of these accounts are bots or not our target audience: see the Organic (Non-targeted Users) column.
📛 Relying solely on organic growth isn’t effective if you want to build a relevant audience.

We use a strategy typical of any social network: identifying users who fit our Ideal customer profile and engaging with them. This involves following the user’s X account and sending a message or comment.
We address multiple goals here. As we develop our product, we test various hypotheses about necessary features and the marketing positioning. Our comments and messages reflect our current inquiries, asking potential users for their opinions and experiences. It’s similar to customer development, sometimes yielding unexpected results.
Sometimes, acquiring one follower on X takes us 60 minutes. On good weeks, it takes half that time. The time on the screenshot is only for cold outreach and doesn't include time spent writing posts and replying to comments, which also takes significant time.
On average, we spend 16 hours a week on cold outreach. Adding 4 hours for posting (as a minimum), we total about 20 hours weekly.

45% of the users who visit unicorns.club and fill out the waitlist form come from X.com. In this sense, we see tangible results—our daily efforts on this channel directly influence the interest in our product from our target audience.

Simple math shows that you need to spend at least 3 hours a day working on your X account every day to grow to 1.5K followers in 6 months. With these figures, you can decide whether dedicating 3 hours daily to X is worth it or if that time is better spent working on your product. What's your choice?
It is so impressed, you spent so many time and got only 1500 followers, half of them are bots… I would give up after 1 or 2 months.
Yes, I feel the same. I was expecting to get at least 5,000
Because building a real, engaged following is not something that can be built in a few months.
I know because I've been at it since mid-2022
do you have the same conversion numbers? can we make the result better, what do you think?
Thanks!
Did you spend most of your focus on just X as the social platform of choice or were you using similar strategies with other platforms?
Great topic, thanks for sharing!
Only on X. Because we cannot afford to allocate any more time to another social network at this stage.
I have experience with LinkedIn and we know exactly how to make it the main channel for attracting both startups and investors. But we'll start using it in June. And I think I will use Tocoway AI (tocoway.com) to eliminate the human work.
Also, last week we started testing a friendly service app.extrovert.pro for commenting in LinkedIn.
Thanks for sharing! your experience is so impressive
thank you
Amazing work, Julia! Your progress is incredibly beneficial for those looking to establish their personal brand on X.
I had a similar experience to yours, achieving around 1500 followers after spending 6 on Twitter. I highly recommend Tweeteasy, as it was instrumental in my growth as well!
what in Tweeteasy gave you the most results - AI comments or insping your own posts with AI? I tried the same tool for AI comments, but I found it very weak because the AI doesn't understand sarcasm and doesn't read graphic materials.
Great post. Thanks for sharing all of those details!
Nice sharing
nice post julia, insightful, loving that you make data driven decisions
we should implement this
🤗 A data-driven approach is crucial in startup fields. All of us should love figures if we want to thrive
This is an insightful read and clear on the effort it takes to build relevant following. My question, what was the rationale behind choosing X as opposed to other channels, like let's say YT for instance?
It's more costly to create content for YouTube. And I've noticed that startup content on YouTube gets few views. And it's much harder to get people to subscribe. But we will definitely do youtube later.
It involves a lot of work, but the result and especially conversions looks amazing. Do you use any tools to speed up the process?
Finding users who fit ICP must also take a lot of time.
What is the difference between sending a message/reply to comment. Does direct messages work much better?
Thanks for the great questions.
We haven't noticed a difference between comments and DMs - maybe if we were sticking to the same posts, then we could draw some conclusions, but we are constantly changing the information we send, so we haven't seen a difference.
But in private messages people are more open to answering the questions asked.
