Spencer for Mac - Save and restore your entire workspace β€” across all Spaces

Hey Indie Hackers πŸ‘‹

I’m building everything solo β€” code, design, marketing, support β€” and switching between all those roles was killing my focus.

So I made Spencer β€” a macOS app that saves and restores your entire window layout across Spaces, Displays, and apps.

Now I have one-click profiles for:

  • Coding

  • Design

  • Marketing

  • Meetings

  • β€œChill mode” (yes, even that 😌)

https://macspencer.app

Why I built it:

Every time I unplugged a display or rebooted, my windows were everywhere. I wasted so much time reorganizing them just to get back into flow.

Now? One click and everything snaps back into place β€” including the number of Spaces and app windows.

πŸ’‘ Core Features:

  • Restore full layouts across multiple Displays & Spaces

  • Handle multiple windows per app

  • Launch saved apps and hide the rest

  • Rebuild the exact number of Spaces

  • Create profiles for different workflows

If you’re a solo builder juggling 5 roles a day, this might save you some mental bandwidth. It definitely did for me.

Would love your thoughts or feature ideas β€” I’m building it in public!

This is really cool, love seeing someone solve the same problem I ran into! I built something similar called Layoutish β€” sounds like we both hit the same breaking point with macOS trashing window layouts when you unplug a monitor.

One thing I focused heavily on was auto-deploy based on monitor detection. So rather than clicking to switch profiles, Layoutish recognises when you plug into a familiar monitor setup and deploys the right layout automatically. Dock your laptop at your desk and everything just appears. Unplug and your laptop layout takes over. It was the thing that made the biggest difference for me day to day.

Also added scheduled layouts so my coding setup kicks in at 9am without me thinking about it.

Always good to see more people building in this space β€” the more of us there are the more it proves macOS genuinely needs better window management natively. Best of luck with Spencer!
