Stand-Up #10 - February 17th, 2020

Stand-Up #10 - February 17th, 2020

I slept poorly last night, so I was pretty tired today. Nevertheless, I made some small gains towards getting the geo-location microservice online.

Before heading into the office this morning, I was able to deploy a simple server to Heroku that returns the visitor's IP, which helped me get used to Heroku again as I hadn't used it in over half a year.

I was also able to dive into Heroku buildpacks after work. I made a simple buildpack based on some online examples, which uses detect, compile, and release shell scripts to apply my test buildpack to the app and make a basic transformation to a text file. Based on my console outputs, I can tell that it's working and I'll now be able to try some more complex tasks tomorrow, like downloading the geo-location database with an API key during the Heroku build process so that my server will have access to it.

Yesterday's progress:

  • Geo-location database hooked up and running with a server on localhost

Today's progress:

  • Heroku familiarization, deployment, and simple Heroku buildpack

Tomorrow's progress:

  • Heroku buildpack that downloads the necessary geo-location database during the Heroku build process using an API key

I've attached pics/screenshots of today's progress as proof (yes I was reckless with a git push --force... I was tired lol)
