Stand-Up #12 - February 19th, 2020

Father, forgive me, for I have sinned...

I git committed my entire geo-location database to avoid the buildpack process and deployed to Heroku.

It worked. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately after that ordeal), I noticed today that the free GeoLite2 database has licensing requirements that prohibit my use case.

On the bright side, I found a free API service that only does country codes (which is all I need) and has a much more permissive license - GNU LPGL which allows for the commercial use of third-party matching.

Yesterday's progress:

  • Heroku custom buildpack (geo-location database downloading successfully with API key, but then stuck)

Today's progress:

  • Scrap buildpack, git commit database like a savage, then scrap the whole GeoLite2 database idea and use a free geo-location country-code-only API which works well enough

Tomorrow's progress:

  • Incorporate this free API into the back-end as I don't think I need my own micro-service anymore

I've attached pics/screenshots of today's progress as proof
