    YESTERDAY

Reached out to mods of subreddit best suited for Belly Bean feedback and got shutdown hard. And according to my research, I think paid advertising would be a waste.

    TODAY

I've $!50 Google credit that need be used by end of month. Debating whether to use it for Belly Bean or one last go for Mane Mogul. (Two sign ups from last month refused my offer to refund their monies and I promised to give it another go.) I'll make the decision tonight.

    KUDOS

@dru_riley for the encouraging feedback re BellyBean! Very much appreciated!

reddit mods are vicious, I can feel that!

      1. 1

(Laughing!) They were gracious. But firm as hell. Can't blame 'em for protecting their domain. Especially given their circumstance!

    2. 2

Your relentless consistency is inspiring, HarlJanice! Great to see you making progress and keeping at it!

      1. 2

I've actually felt a bit down of late re hustling. Feels like I'm treading water and the year has gone to waste. But I appreciate the encouragement!

    3. 2

hey hey! Nice job on your landing page, I love it! Did you do it by yourself with html + css skills or did you use any tool?

I'm starting from scratch at this moment, reading the Epic Guide from Clifford. Do you think this is a good starting point?

      1. 2

(Smiling) A bit of both. I've adopted Gatsby as my platform of choice for anything static. It's blazing fast with lots of perks for free. And then I use a combo of React, SCSS and HTML to pimp the page.

I actually hadn't heard of the Epic Guide, but it after a quick Google search and glance at a Medium post, couldn't hurt. It always comes down to... what's your top priority. Learning? Building? Or income? Tactics can change dramatically depending on focus.

Thanks for the compliment! And look forward to seeing what you make happen!

        1. 1

I'd say my top priority would be building and income... But I don't want to jump in the gun early and regret after, so I'd like to know good sources on from where to start... See I think that's my problem. When I wanted to learn react, I just follow a step-by-step guide for how to build an ecommerce with react. I wish we could have a complete step-by-step guide of how to bootstrap a software business...

      2. 2

I agree. The color scheme on the landing page is fantastic.

I'm building ChatJS (https://chatjs.io). It lets you video chat with website visitors directly on your website.

    EPIC
My goal is to build up the marketing funnel to 1,000 people by end of September.

    YESTERDAY
I built 2 new features to increase the invite-acceptance rate:

    1. the website visitor can choose to do audio-only, for those who aren't comfortable video chatting
    2. the website agent can send a video invitation before the website visitor accepts.

    TODAY
I'm looking into more marketing channels. Cold emails have been too slow.

    1. 2

I interviewed at a company who did something similar (more complex). There is a pretty big market fit out there

      1. 1

Yes! It's an important problem to solve. So many website visitors just come and go. Building a relationship gets them to stay.

        1. 1

For higher cost users, very much worth doing!

@Janice I recently heard this podcast and thought you might find it interesting. The Hustler’s Guide to the Hair Business

@beancounter ChatJS looks cool as hell! I’m not a designer but it seems like a sans serif font would make the UI a lot more appealing. I remixed it so you can check it out.

Thanks Dave for the Kudos. Hope you feel better.

I'd love to be announced when I enter the coffee shop. It'd be so much more personal than the bell that rings now.

    Hustle Hustle Hustle

    Breaking format today.

    DONE/DOING

    • I'm just about done with the first demo application, so I should be writing that up soon.
    • I'm also planning to start laying out demo number 2 today so I can have that finished up early next week.
    • Things are rolling and I'm seeing growing interest enough that making the buy decision easy is my next big hurdle.

Now that I have bulk development of AutomatedAPI complete and the changes should now be smaller in nature, I'm considering a move back to regular work. A 3 month hiatus seems to have been enough to get the ball rolling and I'm thinking that finding a remote job where I have some control over my hours might be the best way to buy time for AutomatedAPI to build a customer base (a process which I anticipate will take about a year to replace income). While I enjoy working directly for my customers, the overhead involved in chasing clients and handling all the other items that go with freelance is less than ideal at this point.

What was great in terms of buying me time and keyboard bandwidth to actually get the product to public status, now seems to interfere a bit (at least for me) with the cognitive bandwidth involved with the marketing and sales bits. Just spit ballin for now, but I'm leaning heavily toward blasting some applications out in the next week or so.

Anyone else struggled with this recently? Curious what other folks think.

    KUDOS
@beancounter great idea, excited to see where that goes

    1. 1

I am a single dad with 3 kids to support so taking time off of work isn't an option for me. I've done it in past businesses and loved it, though I did have a partner to help on the sales and marketing side. I anticipate the same kinds of issues you're facing, so am trying to build out some processes now and get ready to bring on the right person to make sure a pipeline stays full.

    2. 1

I didn't quite follow this. Are you asking if anyone has struggled with balancing freelance marketing with side hustle marketing? And that the bandwidth of one encroaches upon the bandwidth of the other? (If you are then @vimalin is absolutely your man. Ooh. And @Davey, too.)

      1. 1

Juggling time between existing customers for which you do remote work and hustling on the next project which might bring you more freedom is indeed not always as easy as you want it to be.

My existing customers do get priority. They have been loyal to me, so I am loyal to them. They also help me pay my bills, so that's another important detail and reason to make sure they are happy with my services.

OTOH, while focusing on the side hustle I decrease my availability to new customers. Either by raising my fee or by just selling "no" and pointing out I'm too busy.

    3. 1

Thanks Jim! I like AutomatedAPI's blog. Great posts on the beta and progress!
