Standup #1: First User Testing Interview

Today I did the first user interview with a friend, ever! 🙌

I was testing UX of Wordcloudy.com, the product I'm currently building – a word art generator, e.g. for unique personalized prints and gifts.

We did a Zoom call with screenshare and I asked my friend to verbalize his thoughts as he'll be using the product for the first time.

Things I wanted to test:

  • a first-time user should be able to use the editor UI effectively
  • they should be able to create and download a design they're happy with

Lessons learned:

  • creating good UX in isolation is a bad idea 🙈
  • if UX feels great to your habituated eye, it may be a total disaster for others
  • even 1 other perspective can be very useful to uncover things that don't quite work
  • better test the UX early! Preferrably before writing any code.

I know, it all looks obvious and I heard it many times before.
Today, I learned why. 😂

Personal notes
Showing the product to others and getting feedback is freaking scary!
But heck so worth it.

Today plan

  • organize and prioritize feedback
  • start fixing UX issues found, starting with low-hanging fruit
