Start free?

I'm struggling to decide if I should start charging from the start or wait until i see regular daily users.

note - I can't give free trial and then start charging because of the nature of the product.

That depends on what you'd like to achieve with your product I'd say. Do you rely on having many users on your platform to make your product work? Do you want a lot of people for beta testing in the beginning? Do you want to validate your business idea quickly (aka will people pay you money)? ...

      Thanks @martinrlzd

"Do you rely on having many users on your platform to make your product work?"

      • Yes and no. Mostly no In the sense of - more users means more money but it's not a marketplace, that I need tons of users to make it work.

"Do you want a lot of people for beta testing in the beginning?"

      • I wouldn't mind it.

"Do you want to validate your business idea quickly (aka will people pay you money)?"

      • Business idea is validated. I want to validate my execution.

Okay, based on your answers, it doesn't seem to me like you're in an urgent need of a lot of users at the moment.

I don't know what you product is about, but as I assume you're at the very beginning, I'd recommend you to give away 10-100 licences for free (depending on how many people you can reach). Announce that number publicly. It'll help you to get some easy sign ups, and if you're lucky, those people will talk about your product and help spreading it in the early days.

I've just finished Why Free Plans Don’t Work. If you find any value in it I'd suggest also this.

Please, inform us about your final decision :)
