Started a WordPress Migration Agency, Landed My First Client, and Made $1k – Now Facing a Pricing Dilemma. Advice Needed!

Hey guys,
So I recently launched an agency specializing in helping businesses migrate between CMS platforms like WordPress, Webflow, Framer, Prismic, or even headless CMS solutions like Strapi. Things kicked off fast—I landed my first client in under a week!

The job was to migrate an Ethereum research website from their custom CMS to WordPress. We agreed on $1,000, which I thought was fair since they wanted a more user-friendly content management setup. The deadline was 4 days, and I was wrapping up on Day 3 when the founder suddenly dropped a curveball: “We don’t want WordPress anymore; we’re going headless.”

They need a framework that allows them to easily build and update from their end and WordPress could limit them in this capability.

But here’s the issue:

  • The founder expects me to move forward with Strapi now, but...
  • They don’t want to acknowledge the work I’ve already done on WordPress.
  • They’ve only paid $600 so far out of the agreed $1,000 for the WordPress migration.

I told them switching to Strapi will be an additional $1,000 due to the extra work and complexity, bringing the total to $1,400 owed. Now, the founder is pushing back on the new price while still expecting me to proceed with Strapi. I've paused the WordPress migration for now to figure out my next steps.

I need advice:

  • Should I hold firm on the additional cost for the Strapi migration, even if it risks losing the client?
  • How would you handle communication with the client in a situation like this?
  • Any tips for avoiding situations like this in the future?

Would love to hear your thoughts! Thanks in advance.
