Starting a new thing - a cloud computing industry report

I've failed a bunch at starting companies. I had one full-fledged attempt at doing a startup about 14 years ago now, which made me reluctant to try again for a while. A few years ago, I started getting back into side projects, which in self-defense I defined as pretty non-commercial (for example, one was a site with information about San Francisco schools) and which were all wrapped up with attempts to learn to code. I made decent progress on learning Ruby on Rails and published a couple of janky sites over the years, but I never got over the hump to truly get proficient and always got stuck on technical problems, even minor ones, that I couldn't get past.

For this latest go-round, I decided to cut out learning to code. I also don't have budget to pay contractors, so the most straightforward option left was a content product. I recently got back into technology consulting, particularly cloud computing, so I decided to write an industry research report on the cloud computing space. There's a ton of bad reports out there, and while Gartner and IDC are fine, they're expensive and a bit vague. Nothing really seems targeted at a business (rather than technical) customer. It seems like there's a reasonable chance a well done but affordable report could sell.

I thought I would write a first draft in a week. Naturally, I underestimated the scope and overestimated how much free time I have available. Two and a half months later, I'm almost done with my "one week" draft, but it's looking pretty good. I'm also learning a lot about the industry, which will be helpful in my day job. Even if it turns out no one wants to buy the first or second iteration of my research, I think talking to people will give me better insight into what they do need, help clarify my ideal customer, and give me a starting point to iterate from. I'm excited about getting back in the game!
