On Monday I was fired from my dream job.
I was working with them only for about 2 weeks when it happened.
That situation crushed me so hard. I wasn’t prepared for that.
Let’s jump to the beginning to understand what happened.
I was hired by startup to lead the mobile team. It was specifically said to me that I will have last word of how we do things to make sure everything goes smooth and deadline can be met.
Personally, I liked founders very much. We’ve connected on all layers. They wanted to give me free hand to take ownership of mobile product. That’s what I wanted- and it wasn’t my first rodeo.
There was only one thing that I didn’t like- they interviewed and wanted to hire one more person to the team - junior / regular developer. They did it without me and I couldn’t even meet him before my first day.
At that time I didn’t really care that much about that- everything was so great that I thought - what could go wrong?
Just wanted to go back to part of my first sentence- dream job. Why was it a dream job? I really like working with small companies, on the first phase of the product. Product they wanted to build was awesome. Founders are very cool and I felt that we could casually hang out without any issues. Me taking a lead and having possibility for setting up everything as I wanted - perfect.
Now, back to the story, the other guy started work month earlier than me. He spent time on setting up project with his own vision. When I joined he was super skeptical about anything I proposed.
He was always complaining, showing off his ego. Total nightmare, zero compromises. I was open to compromise some of my stuff just to take off with the project. Here is a thing- I cared about that project. I wanted to give 100% of me and make sure we don’t make big mistakes at the beginning.
Issues piled up. There were compromises only on one side - me. I started to feel bad- I was hired for something and compromises weren’t that.
I contacted one of founders and presented the situation that I was in. I couldn’t work like that, there has to be a way of solving that. Guess what happened? I was fired. Not because I was lazy, not even because I made mistakes. I was fired because problems started „after I joined the team”. F***. I gave 100% from myself and they told me that I was the issue.
That was enough. After multiple therapy(gym) sessions, I got to conclusion that I am sick of working for others. I’ve always wanted to create my own businesses but common/safe approach of having good job always won. Not this time though. I might still work for someone else until I bootstrap my own business, but they will never get my passion again. My passion will be reserved only for my own businesses.
So that’s a new chapter for me. I joined this community over a year ago but till this day, I was only a consumer. Now I want to become a producer and be part of this awesome community.
Wish me luck guys, I will need it!
