Startup build in public - Your grocery bill, finally explained.

I built Grocyy because I was tired of having no idea where my grocery money was going. My bank statement gave me one useless number, and every budgeting app I tried required so much manual effort that I quit within weeks. When the tool I actually wanted didn't exist, I built it myself.

Grocyy is an AI-powered receipt scanner and grocery expense tracker for iOS & Android(Coming in this week). You snap a photo of any grocery receipt and the app automatically extracts every item, price, quantity, store name, and category. No manual entry. No spreadsheets. Just scan and see.

Here is what it shows you that nothing else does:

  • Which store is actually costing you the most for what you buy. Not in general — for your specific cart.

  • Which categories are eating your budget. Most people are shocked

  • When they see how much goes to snacks and beverages.

How prices on your regular items have changed over time. Inflation is real and Grocyy makes it visible on a product level. When you are likely to run out of things. The app learns your purchase cadence and predicts restocking needs so you shop planned and not panicked. Families can invite household members so everyone's receipts flow into one shared dashboard.

The hardest part to build was normalizing product names across hundreds of different store receipt formats. ORG BNNA, Organic Banana, and BAN ORG EA are all the same thing — but Walmart, Trader Joe's, Costco, Aldi, and hundreds of regional chains each abbreviate and format things completely differently. Getting that normalization layer right took most of the early development time. Grocyy is free to download on the App Store. Pro plan is $5.99 per month for price tracking, advanced insights, and restock predictions. Family plan is $12.99 per month for household sharing. I would love honest feedback from this community — especially on what would make you actually keep using an app like this past the first week. That retention problem is what I think about most.

I am open to feedback in comments:

    hello founder of grocyy

I just read your Grocyy post. This really stood out: "every budgeting app I tried required so much manual effort that I quit within weeks" and "That retention problem is what I think about most."

That's the exact pivot every solo builder makes. You solve the core problem, ship it, then suddenly you're juggling: What keeps users coming back? Which features actually matter? What should I prioritize next? Managing what to work on each day when you're thinking about retention vs new features vs marketing — that gets scattered fast.

I'm not selling anything — just talking to solo builders about how you actually manage planning and daily execution after launch, especially when you're figuring out what really matters.

Would you be open to a quick 20-minute call about how you're handling priorities with Grocyy right now? I think your perspective would be really valuable.

This is actually solving a real gap most “budgeting” tools fail because they rely on manual input. Turning receipts into structured data is the real unlock here. We've seen similar friction points while helping founders build user-first systems at FoundersBar.

Tracking individual grocery items is such a chore when apps make you type everything in manually. Most people dont realize that store brands often have the exact same supplier as name brands but at half the cost. Do you think adding a feature to compare those price gaps would help keep users engaged?

      Hi Umar,

That's true that name brands vs non name brands have difference in pricing. The bottle neck for me to implement it at this stage is to get the data on daily basis and have it structured to find the between 1000s of products. I will defiantly add it to me feature list as it will increase the user engagement as many people want to know more money saved wherever they can.

I totally get that data bottleneck—syncing thousands of product prices daily is a massive infrastructure challenge. Since you are building that normalization layer, have you considered focusing on the 'Inflation Visibility' angle for your initial growth?

In my work with Digital PR and Media Placements, I have seen that stories about 'Invisible Inflation' get massive traction on high-authority platforms like MSN or Bloomberg. Positioning Grocyy as the tool that exposes these hidden price hikes could build that immediate trust and retention you are looking for, even before the full comparison engine is ready. People love a tool that saves them from being overcharged!
